Buenos Aires Ushuaia
In the morning, transfer to Buenos Aires airport for our domestic flight to Ushuaïa (approx.... more+ 3h30).
From the airplane window, it's obvious. By changing hemisphere, we change perspective. Against a backdrop of imposing mountains, Ushuaïa is very small, and will remain so even once the plane has landed. Here, nature fills the space.
After lunch and your excursion to discover Tierra del Fuego, mid-afternoon transfer to the port of Ushuaïa, where the ship awaits, moored at the foot of the city. The captain and crew welcome you aboard for your first night in the Antipodes. The end of the world is already reversing our perspectives: the city is tiny and the horizon immense. Starting this evening, we sail through the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego's most important maritime route - apart from the Strait of Magellan.

On the agenda for this crossing is the cleaning of our expedition equipment to avoid spreading any... more+ dust or micro-fragments of foreign matter into the Deep South.
It's an opportunity to get to know our expedition team as we work together to preserve the White Continent from the impact of our arrival. Second moment: detailing our itinerary, while looking forward to the slightest opportunity to change it. Sailing in the ice always means letting yourself be surprised by the uncertainty that suddenly becomes possible.

Drake Passage Antarctic Peninsula
During these seven full days, the boat sails from marvel to marvel. Sea and weather conditions... more+ determine the captain's and expedition leader's decisions regarding our stopovers. In Gerlache Strait, a zodiac outing allows us to observe a whale-feeding session, while in Paradise Bay, the approach to a cliff gives us the chance to contemplate blue-eyed cormorants snorting on their nests in the dark rock. At Neko Harbour, a glacier calves icebergs before our very eyes. We can hear the ice melting into the sea with a sparkle worthy of a glass of champagne.

Antarctic Peninsula
Booth Island and Petermann Island were the wintering grounds of Jean-Baptiste Charcot (between 1905... more+ and 1909). In those days, crews marked their passage; the French built a cairn on a hill on Booth Island.
From here, Antarctica offers us the chance to contemplate an infinite "graveyard" of icebergs stranded on the shallows of a bay. Exploring this maze by zodiac confirms our sense of wonder. For many years, Petermann Island was home to the southernmost colony of Papuan penguins, a species accustomed to lower latitudes.
Climate change is breaking these habits. Antarctica, seemingly eternal, reveals itself to be sensitive to what is affecting the rest of the world. To feel this evolution, on the spot, is also to commit ourselves to curbing it, once back home.

Antarctic Peninsula
Will there soon be Papuan penguins beyond the Arctic Circle? We hope we won't have to face up to... more+ this sad fact, so that we can enjoy this mythical moment: the crossing of the line, that fantasized frontier beyond which the Pole seems to offer itself... even though it's still almost 3,000 km away! The boat sails into Crystal Sound, split in two by the Arctic Circle. Crystal or not, ice is everywhere: in glaciers carving out the Peninsula's valleys, in icebergs conversing with our ship. A peaceful dialogue thanks to the watchful eye of the deck crew, who allow us to share from the bridge the intensity of their task in a universe that is both hostile and beautiful.

This is our southernmost day. Beyond, the maze of islands and icebergs between Adelaide Island and... more+ the mainland makes passage impossible. Charcot had found it. But the boat, despite its ice clearance, is wider than the Pourquoi Pas. Our captain and expedition leader take us as far as we've dreamed, while aiming for our safety.
On Detaille Island, British Station W has been unoccupied since 1966, but is well-preserved, with equipment emblematic of the scientific bases of the time. Only a few geodesy researchers came this far in the past. Oh, and the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who played tennis here.

At some point, we have to head north. In small steps, we submit to this requirement. Prospect Point... more+ is still at 66° south latitude. Located on Graham Land, the site offers a unique opportunity to gain a foothold on the Antarctic continent. At this point, the Peninsula is just 80 km wide. But 3,000 m peaks make it impossible to cross. The British base J was deployed here in the 1950s. Nothing remains of it, as the Antarctic Treaty requires a site to be cleared of pollutants once it has been definitively abandoned. So, from the humble visitors we are to the great international institution, everyone defends this common pact to preserve Antarctica from everything but our emotions and curiosity.

This is Port Lockroy, the A-base, British to be sure, but on a site that smacks of France. For Port... more+ Lockroy is not called "locro-ille" but "locroua", after a minister who supported Charcot. Cocorico? The soundtrack of this stopover is more like the vociferations of young papuan penguins and banked chionis clamoring for a peck. Their feeding takes place before our very eyes, on the very steps of the British station, which combines a store, a post office and a museum. A zodiac ride in this sheltered harbour will bring you close to a colony of blue-eyed cormorants, and why not observe a leopard seal resting on a patch of snow. If awakened, this predator might offer us the vision of its own feeding... with penguin. Bon appétit to all.

Antarctic Peninsula
In addition to chinstrap penguins and whaling archaeological sites, the South Shetlands offer a... more+ life-size lesson in volcanism. Deception Island, for example, is an ancient collapsed volcanic cone whose chasm has been invaded by the sea, and our entry into this perfectly sheltered harbor is unforgettable. At the entrance to the bay, basalt needles are petrified volcanic conduits, the same type of which we observe at Half Moon Island. Here, a long, crescent-shaped beach welcomes us into a black-and-white world, where the orange hut of an Argentine resort, open some summers, stands out. The color echoes the hues of the lichens covering the rocks and the red stain on the beaks of the Dominican gulls. We appreciate this communion with wildlife, made possible by our respectful presence in its midst.

Antarctic Peninsula At sea - Drake Passage
It takes two days at sea to go back up the emotional ladder, and come down from the heights of our... more+ unforgettable discoveries to more everyday sensations. The comfort of this boat makes the journey home a little smoother. The crew members take care to provide us with the best services - in the cabins, lounges, spa or fitness center - during Drake's passage. As dazzled as we are by our Antarctic experience, they are now our exploration alter egos: together, we have crossed the Circle.
