Lithuania, or in its full form, The Republic of Lithuania; is a country in Northern Europe, situated on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, north-east of Poland, north of Belarus and south of Latvia. Lithuania has approximately three million five hundred thousand inhabitants. Its capital is Vilnius, its currency, the litas and its official language, Lithuanian. Lithuania is the most southern and the biggest of the three Baltic states. It also has the largest population and the most tourism. The Republic of Lithuania has been a member of the European Union since 1st May 2004 and has been part of the Schengen area since 21st December 2007.
The French spelling of "Lithuanie" (with an "h") is very old. Although correct, it has more or less been abandoned, and nowadays the spelling "Lituanie" is preferred. You still find the letter "h" in the name of the country in other languages and there it is obligatory.
