Klaipěda is a city of 187,316 inhabitants and the main port of Lithuanian sea. Klaipeda is the third largest city in Lithuania after Vilnius and Kaunas.
Old Hanseatic city, known as German Memel, the city has long been contested between the Kingdom of Lithuania and the Teutonic Knights. Peace Lake Melno fixed the borders of the Duchy of Prussia and Lithuania; Memel will remain in Prussia until the defeat of Germany after the First World War.
