This site offers a rare opportunity to observe Galapagos wildlife up close and well-preserved remnants of fragile volcanic rock, found nowhere else in such a unique state. The island gets its name from its resemblance to a type of Asian hat. Here you can see American oystercatchers and Galapagos penguins swimming along the coast.

Millions of years ago, Bahía Urbina lay at the bottom of the ocean. Volcanic uplifts brought it to the surface, and it is now home to sea lions, land iguanas, and flightless cormorants. It is an ideal place to enjoy some free time on the beach, or the guide may suggest a walk.

It is a research facility with an extensive collection of carefully preserved specimens of Galapagos flora. It also serves as a biological research station and active breeding center managed by the Charles Darwin Foundation. Their greatest conservation efforts are aimed at one day eliminating all invasive and non-native plants and animals that are destroying the islands' endemic species.

The Highlands are located in the northern part of Santa Cruz and can reach altitudes of up to 1,500 meters. This region is rich in hills, ferns, volcanoes, and wildlife. It is a striking contrast to the hardened lava beaches and rocky areas of the other islands already visited. It is home to giant tortoises, mockingbirds, finches, and many other species. Santa Cruz South Plaza Santa Fe
Stops 11 and 12 Morning: South Plaza Island South Plaza is one of the smallest islands with a... more+ visitor site, but it is home to an incredible amount of diverse flora and fauna. It has a large population of Sesuvium plants such as prickly pear, which is an important food source for the land iguana. Just a few years ago, mice were finally eradicated from the island, helping the land iguana population to grow healthily once again. The stunning colors of the turquoise waters against the black lava create a setting conducive to incredible photographic opportunities.

Santa Fe is home to the endemic Santa Fe iguana. The island was created by a volcanic uplift and is now home to a forest of prickly pear and Palo Santo trees. It is a picturesque island with two different trails, one leading to a panoramic viewpoint and the other to a small beach. Giant tortoises were once native here but disappeared after pirates and sailors took them aboard as a source of food.

Santa Fe Punta Suarez Gardner Bay
Stages 13 and 14 Morning: Española - Punta Suárez This is a phenomenal site where you will see... more+ many species endemic to Española Island. The trail will pass by the only breeding site for Galapagos albatrosses in the entire archipelago. If you are lucky, you may see a young albatross taking its first flight for up to five years at sea. Older birds remain at sea for months, returning only to breed. They have the same partner for life and meet each year, only here, to breed. Other species that can be seen include marine iguanas, which retain their bright colors all year round, Galapagos doves, Nazca boobies, blue-footed boobies, swallow-tailed gulls, red-billed tropicbirds, and Darwin's finches.

Afternoon: Española - Gardner Bay / Osborn & Gardner Islets This white sand beach is home to a large colony of sea lions and incredibly blue and turquoise waters. Three different finches can be seen, as well as the Española Mockingbird. Over time, the mockingbirds have been offered water or food by tourists and are now unafraid to walk on your belongings or land very close to you. Or visit Osborn and Gardner Islets, which are extraordinary for underwater exploration. Snorkeling is a highlight of this site.

It is very important not to feed or touch the animals. This can disrupt their normal behavior and threaten their future. A short distance from the... more+ center of San Cristóbal is the San Cristóbal Interpretation Center, open to the public since 1998, which provides in-depth knowledge of the archipelago's fascinating history and gives visitors a more holistic understanding of the unique habitats and wildlife of these islands.

The main areas of interest, covered through a number of exhibits, are: natural history, human history, and conservation for the future. For those interested in the geology of the archipelago, there is a comprehensive exhibit on the volcanic birth of the Galapagos and its impact on the habitats found here.
