Begun by... more+ Pharaoh Nectanebo I during Dynasty 30 and completed by the Romans, this is the main sanctuary dedicated to Isis. Take a felucca ride around Elephantine Island and discover the local shops, then depart for the High Dam and the unfinished obelisk. Lunch on board. The Aswan region, rich in schist, alabaster and pink granite found only in this part of Egypt, provided the stone blocks for the pyramids, statues and colossi built by the pharaohs. In the granite quarry you'll find the tallest obelisk known to date (41.75m), which was abandoned due to a crack in the rock. Dinner and overnight on board.

Visit Kom Ombo temple, dedicated to the gods Sobek and Haroeris. Erected on a hill, the temple is surrounded by an enclosing wall covered with reliefs. Inside, the space is divided into two parts: the northern one dedicated to Haroeris, the hawk-headed god, and the southern one to Sobek, the crocodile god. Return to the boat and sail to Edfu.

The two temples are linked by a dromos, a long alley lined with sphinxes, and are dedicated to Amun. The three-enclosure temple at Karnak is itself part of the Karnak religious complex, which includes the ruins of other temples, buildings and pylons. Its construction and subsequent modifications spanned more than 2,000 years. Luxor Temple, erected in the 14th century BC under the reign of Amenhotep III, was also subsequently modified by Ramses II, who added six monumental statues and two obelisks. The tour continues with the Colossi of Memnon, the last remains of the temple of Amenhotep III, and Deir el Bahari, the funerary temple of Queen Hatshepsut. Carved out of the rock in the Theban mountain, this three-tiered temple built in 1455 is both harmonious and modern, and although dedicated to the god Amun, it also contains chapels to Anubis and Hathor, the patron goddess of women: hardly surprising, since Hatshepsut, one of the four pharaohs to have ruled Egypt, is considered “the first great woman whose name has been preserved in history”. The city of which the temple was the heart has disappeared. Denderah appears to be in an excellent state of preservation. In fact, only part of the temple remains, which was built on the principle of a triple brick enclosure: the enclosures of Hathor's husband, Horus, and her son, Ihy, have almost completely disappeared. All that remains is Hathor's enclosure, almost 300m square, which was the largest of the three and the heart of the sacred edifice. Lunch on board before continuing the cruise to Naga Hamadi. As early as the Old Kingdom, it was associated with Osiris, whose popularity had spread throughout the country. The idea that any Egyptian could become an Osiris quickly spread. Funeral rites hitherto reserved for pharaohs and nobles were extended to all classes of the population, and Osiris became a universal god. Abydos became Osiris' main place of worship, as one of his tombs housed his head. Return to the ship, lunch and continued sailing to Sohag. Dinner and overnight on board.

Back to the boat for lunch, followed by a visit to the Beni Hassan tombs. The site owes its name Beni Hassan to an Arab tribe that settled here in the late 18th century. For obvious topographical reasons, the necropolis was built to the east rather than west of the Nile. In fact, in this area, the Gebel (mountain range) is only a kilometer or so from the river, whereas on the west bank, traditionally reserved for the dead, the mountain is much further away. Return to the boat after the visits, sail to El Minya and have lunch. In the evening, folk show on board. Dinner and overnight stay.

Of the thirty-nine tombs in this cliff-dwelling necropolis, only twelve have been frescoed on a specially laid plaster coating. The typical decorations depicting daily and agricultural life in the Middle Ages are of inestimable archaeological value and provide precious information on this period of Ancient Egypt. These ornaments are particularly striking in the tomb of Khnumhotep II, monarch of the 12th Dynasty. Lunch on board, then afternoon sail to Beni Suef. Dinner and overnight on board.

The Unfinished Obelisk of Aswan is an impressive remnant located in an ancient granite quarry in Upper Egypt. Commissioned during the reign of Queen Hatshepsut, it was intended to be the largest obelisk ever constructed, reaching about 42 meters in height and... more+ weighing an estimated 1,200 tons. However, a crack that appeared during the carving process halted the work, leaving the monument incomplete and still attached to the bedrock.
Today, the site provides a unique insight into the working methods of ancient Egyptian stonecutters. Visitors can observe extraction techniques, tool marks, and the monumental logistics involved in creating such structures.
