Optional authentic excursion/experience: visit to Melk Abbey. A masterpiece of Gothic architecture,... more+ the abbey dominates the splendid Wachau valley. The ochre color of the grandiose façade is reminiscent of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The abbey's interior also boasts magnificent Baroque frescoes and a library containing some 100,000 volumes, including some of the most precious manuscripts of the Middle Ages. Return on board and sail to Dürnstein, arriving early afternoon. Free time in this small medieval town, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its architectural heritage. The village is packed with sights, including the elegant baroque bell tower of the Dürnstein church, the medieval and Renaissance facades of the town hall and the colorful houses in the main alley.

Continuation to Vienna.
In the evening, optional authentic excursion/experience: visit Vienna "by night". A veritable open-air museum, you'll discover the capital in all its glory. The illuminated facades reveal all their splendor. The Musikverein takes on a whole new dimension under these lights, the opera house reveals its interior decor thanks to the play of light, and on Schwarzenbergplatz you'll see the gilded bronze statue of Johann Strauss, as well as many other monuments, such as the Hofburg Palace and the Augustinian Church. You'll love this other side of Vienna.

A prestigious court center in the 18th century, Schoenbrunn Palace's ochre facade is closely linked to the dual Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Then take a panoramic tour of the famous boulevard known as "the Ring". You'll see the exceptional monuments built between 1830 and 1890 that give it its unique atmosphere.

Afternoon at leisure OR optional extra: carriage ride in Vienna. A fun and original way to visit Vienna. Let the rhythm of the horses guide you through the city, plunging you into the heart of its history. The coachman will lead you through the narrow streets of the Austrian capital to admire the magnificent Baroque buildings that adorn certain districts.

The lights brighten up the facades of the monuments, providing a spectacular backdrop. You'll catch a glimpse of the Parliament, where the buttresses, towers and dome are highlighted by skilful lighting, the Chain Bridge with Buda Castle illuminated in the background, the Fishermen's Bastion with its seven towers paying homage to the seven tribes that founded Hungary, and a superb view of illuminated Pest.

- visit to the Budapest covered market Departure on foot to the Budapest covered market. With its gleaming Zsolnay tile roof, Budapest's Grand Central Market is the largest market hall built in the 19th century. You'll discover an incredible array of products, including the famous paprika garlands. A tasting of sweet local specialties will round off your visit. Return to the ship on foot.

Activities

Departure by coach in company of your host/hostess towards Melk Abbey. We will meet up with our guides in the inner courtyard to start our visit. The Abbey overlooking the Danube was first built as the Babenberg's fortified castle. It was founded in the... more+ 11th century and the current buildings of the Benedictine abbey date from the Baroque era and were designed by architect Jakob Prandtauer. Melk Abbey now houses a museum in which you'll discover several rooms that have been enhanced thanks to architecture, sound and light as well as the use of various types of media. Computer animations will tell you a story about the construction of the edifices. You will also visit the marble hall, the world famous library and the bedchambers where a number of illustrious visitors have slept. Return on board by coach. PLEASE NOTE Good walking shoes are recommended: from the parking lot to the entrance of the Abbey there are stairs and a 500m cobblestone path. Depending on the cruise the visit can be in the morning or in the afternoon. Please dress appropriately. Depending on navigation schedules passengers could have free time. We'll start off towards the citadel for an impressive view over the city and on Pest. We'll continue by coach towards the Castle Quarter from where you'll get to admire the Royal Palace, former residence of the Hungarian kings. In the company of our guides, we will leave for a panoramic tour of Budapest, the Pearl of the Danube. First we will head for the hills of Buda by crossing the Elizabeth Bridge and we will go up to the Castle quarter, from where we'll enjoy a fantastic... more+ panoramic view of the city. We will walk round the castle quarter and on to the Fisherman's Bastion, built in neo-Roman style in 1902 for the simple pleasure of offering a panoramic view over the city and the Danube. Behind the Bastion, we will find Matthias Church which notably was the venue for the coronation of Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife "Sissi". Our coach will then take us down to the plains of Pest. There, we will visit Heroes' Square whose central monument depicting Prince Arpad and the chieftains of seven Magyar tribes was built for the millennium of Hungary. We will pass by the famous Szechenyi thermal baths, the zoo - a true piece of architecture - Vajdahunyad Castle and more. We will walk through the famous Andrassy Avenue and pass by St. Stephen's Basilica whose construction began in 1851 and was only completed in 1905. We will walk along the river and see the famous Parliament building overlooking the Danube with its white silhouette in the Byzantine and neo-Gothic styles. We'll leave on foot for the Budapest Market Halls. The Great Market Hall is the largest and most spectacular of the five market halls built in the 19th century. Some residents will spend hours on public transportation to shop at the Központi Vásárcsarnok.
