Experience: panoramic tour of Cochem. Set off on foot along the Moselle before crossing the bridge to explore Cochem's old town through its picturesque alleyways. Admire the charming half-timbered houses, St. Martin's church, the Capuchin convent and the market square. As you leave the town in the midst of the peaceful countryside and forest, the path takes you up to the castle overlooking the town, from where you can appreciate the magnificent panorama of Cochem and the Moselle. On the way down, pass by the "Tummelchen" with its view of the castle, then return via the upper town.

Optional authentic excursion/experience: Thurant Castle. Departure by coach from Alken to Thurant Castle in the Moselle Valley. The symbol par excellence of this region, partly built on Roman foundations, Thurant Castle is one of the oldest in the Moselle region. It was named in memory of the occupation of the fortress of Thuron in Syria during the Crusades by Count Palatine Henri, brother of King Otto VI, who had it built in 1197 on his return from the Crusades. During the War of the Palatine Succession (1688-1697), most parts of the castle were destroyed by French troops. The castle was rebuilt in the 20th century. The terrace offers an unforgettable view of the Moselle.

Free time OR optional authentic/experiential excursion: train ride, wine tasting and visit to the Rüdesheim Mechanical Music Museum. Departure by tourist train for a guided tour of the Rüdesheim vineyards. Wine tasting in the historic cellars of Bassenheimer Hof, a 16th-century stately home. Then on to the Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett museum, housed in a historic 15th-century building. It houses an impressive collection of mechanical musical instruments, one of the largest and most beautiful collections from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
In the evening, the famous Drosselgasse awaits you, with its numerous dance halls and bands.

You'll have the opportunity to enter the thousand-year-old cathedral, whose construction began in 975. You'll then stroll through the streets of the Old Town towards Gutenberg Square. Finally, you'll visit the Gutenberg Printing Museum(3). Johannes Gensfleisch Gutenberg was born in Mainz between 1394 and 1400, and is recognized throughout Europe as the inventor of movable type printing.

Guided walking tour of Cochem
Depart on foot from the boat with your guide, who will show you around the charming village of Cochem, the pearl of the Moselle. The tour will begin on the opposite bank of Cochem, in the Cond district. This former fishing village was connected to the town of... more+ Cochem by the Moselle bridge in 1927. As you cross the bridge, you will see the imperial castle of Cochem, the Reichsburg, dating from the year 900, on the heights above. Once you arrive in Cochem, you will stop in front of a fresco depicting the history of the town from its occupation by Roman legions to the 20th century. Your guide will then take you on a stroll through the narrow streets where you will discover picturesque half-timbered houses, St. Martin's Church, the Capuchin monastery, the market square, and more.After the tour, you can enjoy some free time strolling along the Moselle and taking in the green landscape.NOTESWear comfortable shoes: the streets are paved.The return to the ship will be on foot.The order of visits may be changed.Times are given as a guide only.

Cochem panoramic walk
We'll depart on foot for a walk along the Moselle before crossing the bridge leading to the old town of Cochem. You'll get to admire the picturesque streets lined with half-timbered houses, St Martin's Church, the Capuchin Monastery and Church and... more+ the marketplace. Our path will then lead us outside the town through a wild natural reserve all the way to Cochem Castle (Reichsburg) which overlooks the whole town. From there, we'll encounter gorgeous views over Cochem and the Moselle. We'll pass by the "Tummelchen" area, offering a view on the castle, before returning to our ship via the upper part of town.  PLEASE NOTE The order of the visits can change. Times are approximate.

The oldest castle in the Moselle got its name from the occupation of the... more+ fortress of Thuron in Syria at the time of the Crusades. Thurant Castle was built on the site of a Roman fort in 1197 by the brother of King Otto VI, Count Palatine Henry who had it built when he returned from the aforementioned Crusades. From 1246 to 1248, the castle was besieged by the archdiocese of Köln and Trier, following which it was divided into two parts separated by a wall. During the War of the Palatine Succession (1688-1697) most parts of the castle were destroyed by French troops. The castle was rebuilt in the 20th century. From the terrace, enjoy an unforgettable view of the Moselle. After some free time, we'll return on board in Alken. PLEASE NOTE Good walking shoes are recommended. The order of the visits can change. You’ll begin the tour with a guided tour of the Rüdesheim vineyards aboard a small train, during which you’ll discover the famous vineyards that were already cultivated by the Romans. The little train will then stop right in front of the historic Bassenheimer Hof winery, a 16th-century manor house, where you’ll take part in a wine tasting*. A winemaker from the Störzel family winery will guide you through a tasting of three wines—from the driest to the sweetest—while sharing the history of the winery and winemaking in the Rüdesheim region, along with some local anecdotes. After the tasting, you’ll head to the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments, located 100 meters from the winery. The “Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett” is Germany’s first museum dedicated to musical instruments with built-in memory. From delicate music boxes to the colossal concert-piano orchestrions, no fewer than 350 automatic instruments are gathered here to form one of the largest and most beautiful collections from the 18th to the 20th century, displayed across more than 400 m². Visitors can also admire the tools and machines used to manufacture organ cylinders, music charts, note rolls, and music box plates. Regardless of their age, museum visitors always take great pleasure in discovering this unique music, the techniques of yesteryear, and how these instruments work.
