A small drop of basalt in the North... more+ Atlantic Ocean, Surtsey is a volcanic island, born from an underwater eruption that occurred between 1963 and 1967, off the coast of the Vestmann Islands archipelago, south of Iceland. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, landings are not permitted to protect its ecosystem, which is free from human presence. Only a few scientists are allowed to access it to study the island’s plant and animal colonization. Mosses, fungi, and lichens have been replaced by vascular plants. Nearly 300 species of invertebrates and 90 species of birds have gradually colonized it. During a cruise around Surtsey, you will enjoy a unique view of the contours of this extraordinary island.

Activities

Heimaey, the Pompeii of the North
Your excursion will begin at the natural harbor of Heimaey, surrounded by high cliffs where a multitude of birds live. These birds and their eggs have long been an essential source of food for the islanders. From the dock, your coach will take you to the... more+ valley of Herjólfsdalur, where the ruins of ancient farms dating back to the island's colonization have been uncovered. Your excursion will then continue along the picturesque west coast of the island, offering you the opportunity to admire the islands of the archipelago. Surtsey, the youngest of these islands, was formed during a volcanic eruption in 1963 and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will then make a photo stop at Stórhöfði, which offers beautiful panoramas; this is where puffins nest in the spring and early summer months. You will then continue towards two volcanoes: Helgafell, which is 5,000 years old and nicknamed the "holy mountain," and Eldfell, much younger and known as the "mountain of fire." The eruption of the latter in 1973 led to the immediate evacuation of the islanders to the mainland. You will stop here and walk for about 10 minutes to the promontory to enjoy the panoramic view. Then, you will continue your journey through the new lava fields, making your way to Skansinn – a fort housing the wooden church that was gifted by Norway to the inhabitants of the Vestmannaeyjar Islands to commemorate the millennium of Christianity in Iceland. You will then visit the Eldheimar Museum, "the Pompeii of the North," where the history and consequences of the 1973 eruption are discussed. After the visit, you will return to your ship. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and layering your clothing. The walk to the promontory can be steep and slippery. Circumnavigation of Heimaey
The starting point of this excursion is located at the port, which long served as a haven for the Icelandic fishing fleet before being nearly entirely destroyed by the volcanic eruption in 1973.
From the dock, you will take a 15-minute walk before boarding... more+ a boat to explore the island from the sea.
You will leave the cliffs that surround the port and begin a journey that will take you past colonies of millions of birds and allow you to explore caves accessible only by boat.
The Vestmann Islands host one of the largest varieties of seabird species in all of Iceland, and there are many opportunities to observe this magnificent wildlife up close. Puffin colonies are estimated to number six to eight million individuals, and nowhere else in the world do so many of these species coexist so closely with humans.
These islands also shelter one of the largest colonies of gannets and guillemots. Many other seabird species can be observed, as well as cetaceans such as orcas, dolphins, and porpoises.
Your approximately one-and-a-half-hour boat trip will also allow you to discover several sea caves, including Klettshellir (the cliff cave).
You will then return to the port and your ship. For this excursion, we recommend wearing comfortable shoes, a hat and sunglasses, as well as warm, waterproof clothing. We remind you that this sea excursion is entirely dependent on weather conditions and may be modified or canceled if sea conditions are unfavorable. Wildlife observation cannot be guaranteed. Puffins leave the island in August for their migration, so sightings may be limited starting that month.

Caves, craters and coves
This adventure will take you through some of the most renowned hiking trails along the coast and offer the chance to explore a volcanic cave, all under the gaze of the famous Snæfellsjökull glacier.
You will begin your excursion at Saxhöll with a... more+ refreshing walk among the craters. The hike to the main crater will take about 30 minutes round trip, and although it is not particularly high (around 300 meters), its summit will provide splendid views. This will also be an opportunity to walk around the entire volcanic crater and observe its interior.
Next, you will discover beautiful coves during a hike of about 1 km. Visit Djúpalónssandur, a lovely pebble beach located at the foot of the glacier. From the top of the cliffs, you can enjoy stunning views and see the ancient labyrinth built by fishermen.
Finally, you will reach the Vatnshellir cave for an excursion into the underground world, taking a 200-meter-long lava tunnel, precisely the location described by Jules Verne in his famous novel *Journey to the Center of the Earth*. Following the path of the lava flow, you will descend into the cave, 35 meters below the surface, to discover incredible colors and lava formations. The upper part of the cave has a fantastical appearance with exceptional lava formations resembling curved statues on the walls. The lower part of the cave is accessible via a long, narrow staircase that leads you deeper underground to a place that has remained hidden from the outside world for thousands of years. Scientists believe that the Vatnshellir cave was formed 6,000 to 8,000 years ago during an eruption. We recommend wearing good hiking boots as well as warm clothing and gloves, as the temperature underground is only 6 °C. A helmet and flashlight will be provided. A minimum of 10 participants is required for this excursion.

The Snaefellsnes Peninsula
From the quay, your coach will take you through the small fishing villages surrounding the famous volcano, topped with ice: Snæfellsjökull. You will stop at Djupalonssandur for a short walk to the edge of the Atlantic, amidst a panorama dominated by peaks... more+ and volcanoes, where the color of the lava contrasts with the blue of the ocean. You will be able to admire the mythical glacier covering the summit of the imposing Snæfellsjökull, made famous in 1864 by Jules Verne, who made its crater the entry point to the underground adventure in his novel *Journey to the Center of the Earth*.

Continuing along the Londrangar cliffs, you will reach the tiny fishing village of Arnarstapi. Here, you can admire remarkable multicolored lava formations and observe numerous seabirds living on the surrounding cliffs.

You will then make a final stop at Budir, known for its black lava landscapes and long stretch of blonde sandy beach. Finally, you will head north across Frodarheidi Heath before returning to Grundarfjordur and your ship.

This moderately difficult excursion involves walking on uneven but generally flat terrain. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the ground may be slippery and steep in places. It is advisable to bring a waterproof windbreaker and warm clothing. Please note that the order of visits may be reversed.

The charms of the Myvatn region
At the departure from the quay, your coach will head south towards Godafoss, “the waterfall of the gods,” magnificent, abundant, swirling waterfalls shaped like a crescent moon. Their name reflects the historical event that took place in the year 1000... more+ when the tribal chief Thorgeir made a public declaration in favor of Christianity and threw his pagan deity sculptures into the falls. At that time, he was also the head of the Althing (or Parliament), and it was his difficult choice to tie the nation’s fate to its religion.

The road continues to Lake Myvatn, one of the largest in the country, covering 36.5 km², world-renowned for its beauty and varied landscape sculpted by volcanic eruptions, the last of which occurred about fifteen years ago.

To the east stands the extinct volcano Hverfell, while to the northwest a protected nesting site hosts tens of thousands of birds, allowing for the observation of many different species of ducks.

In this area of great geological interest, there are numerous pseudocraters around the lake, particularly at Skutustadir and Dimmuborgir, famous for its lava labyrinth and strange volcanic structures in columns, arches, and other diverse forms.

Just beyond, behind the Namafjall mountains, the geothermal environment is striking with multiple mud pots, steam columns, sulfur deposits, and bubbling hot springs and fumaroles. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant in the Myvatn region.

A panoramic tour of the charming town of Akureyri is planned before returning to the port and your ship. For this moderately difficult excursion, it is advisable to wear good closed walking shoes (the terrain can be slippery at times) and to bring warm, waterproof clothing. Godafoss and Laufas Museum
A brief orientation tour of the city will allow you to see the sites and remnants of the old town before heading south towards Godafoss, the "Waterfalls of the Gods," with their stunning crescent-shaped cascades. Their name reflects a historical event in the... more+ year 1000 when the chieftain Thorgeir publicly declared for Christianity and threw his pagan deity sculptures into these impressive waterfalls. At that time, he was also the leader of the Althing (or Parliament), and it was his difficult choice to link the nation’s fate to its religious affiliation.
Then, through the vast spaces of the Fnjoskadalur valley, the road leads to Dalsmynni. The structure of the mountain walls confirms that a massive glacial lake once occupied this valley, which gradually drained as the ice melted.
You will then visit the Laufas museum, which was originally a farm and a parsonage. Dating back to the 19th century, the farm is made of turf and wood, with grass-covered roofs. The museum displays traditional costumes, local crafts, and tools once used for fishing and agriculture.

Thermal baths and Godafoss
You will cross the old town of Akureyri before heading to Godafoss to admire one of Iceland's most spectacular waterfalls. During the Althing meeting in the year 1000, the Icelanders voted in favor of adopting Christianity. In a symbolic gesture to sweep away... more+ the old religion, wooden idols from Norse mythology were then thrown into these falls. Godafoss literally means "the waterfall of the pagan gods," in memory of this event.

Your excursion will take you through Nordic landscapes to Húsavík, where you can immerse yourself in the warmth of a geothermal sea bath and discover a true wellness wonder. In the natural tranquility of the Icelandic fjords, enjoy a rejuvenating moment for body and mind while admiring the view of the mountain range to the west, Skjálfandi Bay at the foot of the cliffs, and the Arctic Circle on the horizon.

You will then board your coach for a one-hour ride back to your ship. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, a waterproof windbreaker, and a warm sweater. Don’t forget to bring a towel, a swimsuit for your geothermal sea bath, and flip-flops. The geothermal center has separate changing rooms with showers. It is customary in Iceland to shower without a swimsuit for hygiene reasons. A secure individual locker will be available to store your personal belongings.

Maritime culture and traditions
You will start your excursion with a drive through the city center along the narrow coastal road to the small town of Bolungarvik, where a stop will allow you to explore its church. The next visit will take you to Osvor, a restored old fisherman's house from... more+ 1988. This former shelter for fishing boats is a life-size illustration of the extremely difficult life of Icelandic fishermen until the 20th century.

The village of Bolungarvik is nestled in a spectacular bay surrounded by mountains. The fjord that bathes the town, Isafjardardjup or "Djup," is the largest fjord on Iceland's eastern coast. You will follow its deep waters back to Isafjördur via the Tungudalur valley, with a pause to take in the beautiful scenery of the valley.

Upon your return, you will pass through the historic old town with its 17th-century buildings before visiting the maritime museum. This museum is located in one of the oldest houses in Iceland, a monument in itself, alongside three other renovated buildings dating back to 1780.

At the end of your visit, you will be offered a typically Icelandic tasting. You will discover local specialties such as schnapps, dried fish, and canned fish prepared the Icelandic way.

Flowers and fjords
From the dock, board your local coach for a short trip through a mountain tunnel and across the Westfjords mountains to the fjords of Dýrafjörður and Önundarfjörður. Breathtaking views of spectacular landscapes sculpted by glaciers centuries ago.
Your... more+ first stop is the Skrúður Botanical Garden, a jewel of cultivated plants contrasting with the raw subarctic landscape. This botanical garden was the first of its kind in Iceland, founded by a pioneer grower in 1909. Enjoy a guided exploration of the garden.
Then continue to the village of Flateyri and discover local history and culture. The village is nestled in the magnificent Önundarfjörður fjord. Enjoy a live music performance at the charming village church, followed by a short stroll along the main street and along the harbor. Stop for a coffee break with locally made refreshments. Next to the café, you can visit the old bookshop or enjoy the view of the harbor.
Finally, rejoin your coach for your return transfer. This tour involves walking about 2 km over rough terrain, gravel and grass. We recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes and a windproof jacket.

Volcanic landscapes and Viking history
From the port, your route will take you along the enchanting lake of Kleifarvatn, one of the deepest in Iceland. A brief stop will allow you to admire the typical Icelandic landscapes, marked by cairns indicating ancient paths leading to the Reykjanes... more+ Peninsula.

You will then reach the geothermal lava fields of Krysuvik, a colorful place that stands in stark contrast to the sand and lava fields of the region. There, you will witness the power of steam jets escaping from the depths of the Earth's crust. You will traverse incredible landscapes dotted with multicolored natural pools and astonishing bubbling mud pots. After this visit, you will continue across the impressive volcanic plateau of Reykjanes.

The contrast of the landscape continues as we descend toward the sea, heading to a bay with emerald hues, then climbing back up through lava fields and lush meadows. You will make a brief stop at the bridge between the continents, where you will have the opportunity to step from the Eurasian tectonic plate to the North American tectonic plate.

You will then proceed to the small town of Njardvik and its recently opened Viking museum. This museum permanently displays the Islendingur (the Icelandic), an exact replica of a 23-meter-long Viking ship that could carry 70 crew members. This vessel was used in 2000 by its builder, Gunnar Eggertsson, to make a round trip to America, just as his ancestors did 1,000 years earlier.

You'll enjoy breathtaking views of an island rich in history.... more+ Accompanied by your guide, you’ll take an invigorating and enjoyable stroll over the lava. Your guide will recount the story of the volcanic eruption of 1973, sharing anecdotes and insights into the lives of locals who had to rebuild their town and who now live on the island.

First, you’ll reach Skansinn, where you’ll find a replica of a 17th-century fort. Nearby, you’ll see a wooden church and Landlyst, the oldest house on the island. From Skansinn, you’ll climb a small hill and walk on the new lava that formed during the spectacular eruption of 1973. Your local guide will tell you about this eruption and the story of the people who had to leave their homes overnight. Five thousand residents were evacuated from the island. You’ll then walk along the edge of the lava field, enjoying beautiful views of the town before ascending the Eldfell volcano.

Finally, you’ll descend to the Eldheimar Museum, where you can learn about the volcanic eruption through photos, videos, and displays. The highlight of this exhibition is a house that was uncovered after being buried under ash and lava for 40 years.

Weather permitting, you’ll have the option to return to the boat or continue exploring the town on your own. This excursion involves a 2-hour hike over uneven ground, gravel, and grass. We recommend wearing good hiking shoes, dressing in layers due to frequent temperature changes, and protecting yourself from the sun. This excursion is a peaceful paddle on the fjord, ideal for those seeking an introduction to sea kayaking. Kayaking in the heart of the mountains is an unforgettable adventure. Birdwatchers love this sport, as it provides a unique and subtle way to observe bird life from a different angle. While paddling at the feet of the stunning mountains towering over the area around Isafjördur, travelers experience the closeness of nature and the beauty of the landscape from an exciting perspective and in a safe environment.

From the dock, a 15-minute walk will take you to the starting point. You'll begin with a short lesson in paddle handling, then launch your boats from behind the maritime museum. You’ll set off on a circular route through the heart of the fjord, observing various bird and seal species along the way.

Participants in this excursion must be in good physical condition, able to swim, and capable of carrying their kayak a short distance to the launch point. The excursion includes a 30-minute round-trip walk to where the kayaks are stored. We recommend bringing warm, waterproof shoes and clothing, along with a change of clothes. The kayaks are single-seat vessels, and all equipment and life jackets are provided. The excursion's schedule is subject to weather conditions, and it will be led by an English-speaking guide only.

Once your journey through Iceland's history concludes, immerse yourself in the warmth of the Sky Lagoon, a geothermal ocean lagoon facing the vastness of the North Atlantic Ocean. Experience a unique wellness retreat at the Sky Lagoon, reconnecting visitors with their bodies in the purest Icelandic tradition.

This artificial site captures hot water from over 1,000 meters deep through a geothermal drilling station and sends it via pipeline to Reykjavik. A small portion of this water is "redirected" to pools, then heated to temperatures between 30 and 40°C, and brought to outdoor pools. The steam rising from the water gives the landscape a fantastical character. Its mineral-rich, silica-laden waters are renowned for their therapeutic effects on the skin.

After a short transfer, enjoy 2 hours and 30 minutes of free time in the warm lagoon waters and appreciate all the benefits of a 7-step ritual:

- This excursion involves walking on mostly flat, paved surfaces. We recommend bringing your swimsuit. A towel will be provided at the Sky Lagoon entrance. On-site, you will find a restaurant, a bar, shops, and changing facilities. This excursion is not recommended for individuals with heart or arterial conditions, diabetes, or for pregnant women.
