A colorful frontier settlement with more snowmobiles than inhabitants, Longyearbyen is a unique place on the edge of the Arctic wilderness. If you have some time, take the opportunity to explore it before enjoying a free and peaceful evening.

Longyearbyen Ny Alesund
Today, you will discover the serenity of Ny-Ålesund and its surrounding fjords, including... more+ Krossfjord and Kongsfjord. Enjoy a true day of pause, as the proximity to the Norwegian Mapping Authority’s geodetic station requires us to disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Ny-Ålesund, one of the northernmost settlements in the world and a former mining town, was the starting point for Roald Amundsen’s expeditions north aboard his airship Norge. Today, it has become an international center for scientific and climate research while preserving remnants of its past.

Exploring the fjords around Ny-Ålesund immerses you in breathtaking ice-covered landscapes. Adventure awaits as we take every opportunity to launch our small expedition boats, go ashore for a hike, or navigate alongside majestic glaciers.

This wild expanse, dotted with steep mountains, austere glaciers, and magnificent islands, offers opportunities to search for Arctic wildlife: whales, seals, walruses, and reindeer. If we’re truly fortunate, we might even spot the elusive polar bear from the ship's observation deck. In the stunning Kongsfjord region, you may witness impressive glaciers calving icebergs into the sea.

North West National Park Sailing to the ice floe
If ice conditions allow, we will sail north and cross the 80th parallel to explore the pack ice and... more+ its ever-changing landscape. The transition zone between the ice cap and the sea is a magical yet fleeting place, with waters dotted with sea ice and drifting icebergs. From our ship, you may spot seals and walruses basking on the sparkling ice. If conditions permit, we’ll launch our expedition boats for an unforgettable experience up close to the floating ice.

The pack ice is not a fixed boundary: it shifts with the seasons and weather, so this experience is not guaranteed, despite our best efforts to make it possible. In summer (May to August), the ice retreats further toward the pole, which may put it beyond our reach. In this case, we will explore the deep fjords, mighty glaciers, and enchanting landscapes of the Spitsbergen coast, which are just as impressive. Between late July and early August, wildflowers bloom, covering the landscape in a burst of color.

Sailing to the ice floe Spitsbergen
At this stage of your journey, expect anything. The adventure in its purest form continues. If the... more+ ice conditions allow, we will venture towards the frozen marine landscapes of the East Coast of Spitsbergen.

Although elusive, there are strong chances you will spot a polar bear over the next two days. We will also remain on the lookout for walruses, Brünnich’s guillemots, and other seabirds in the Hinlopen Strait. Afterward, we may head south to Freeman Strait and Kapp Lee or depart to Edgeøya or Barentsøya aboard our expedition boats.

And if the ice blocks our passage through the Hinlopen Strait, you will experience an equally thrilling adventure at the heart of the wonders of western Svalbard. We will follow a flexible route between deep fjords and glaciers spilling into the sea, in search of remarkable Arctic wildlife.
