Your expedition cruise begins with an overnight stay in Seattle.
If you can, why not arrive early... more+ to explore what the Emerald City has to offer? Head to the Seattle Aquarium to observe sea otters and a giant Pacific octopus. You can also enjoy stunning views of Puget Sound and the surrounding mountains while strolling through the Olympic Sculpture Park, dotted with works by renowned artists.

And to awaken all your senses, visit the famous Pike Place Market. Open for over a century, this local farmers’ market is a true attraction with its fishmongers tossing salmon, street musicians, and lively bars.

Today, you will fly from Seattle to Nome for the start of your expedition cruise.
Nome is located... more+ at the tip of the Seward Peninsula, which extends into the Bering Sea, and is perhaps Alaska’s most famous gold rush town. Remnants of that era can be seen everywhere, including abandoned dredges, early 20th-century steam engines, and old railroad tracks.

Nome was also the final destination for three of Roald Amundsen’s major polar expeditions, including his 1926 attempt to reach the North Pole by air. It is the perfect starting point for your great Alaskan adventure.

Bering Sea Saint-Matthieu
Saint Matthew Island is part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Located 322... more+ kilometers from the nearest village, the island is both wild and remote. You’ll find remnants of abandoned buildings between black sand beaches and tundra scattered with wildflowers. A few bold settlers tried to live here, but none succeeded.
Today, the only inhabitants are birds, including thousands of puffins, murres, and cormorants. During our nature landing, if we’re lucky, we may spot the rare McKay’s bunting, which breeds almost exclusively here. And listen closely, we might hear the sound of the singing vole, named for its unusual alarm call.

Saint-Matthieu Saint-Paul
Wind-swept Saint Paul Island is home to the largest Unangan community in the United States, with... more+ about 480 residents. You can visit the historic remnants of barabaras, traditional semi-subterranean dwellings designed to protect against ocean winds.
Saint Paul has also been designated as an Important Bird Area for conservation. A perfect resting place for migratory birds, the island attracts nearly 300 different species. Look out for horned and tufted puffins, Aleutian sandpipers, and rare slaty-backed gulls.

Along the shoreline, you might spot northern fur seals playing and waddling around. Half of the world’s population of these charming creatures lives on these islands.

Dutch Harbor
Dutch Harbor is the largest fishing port in America and a fascinating place to visit. As you sail... more+ in this direction, you might catch a glimpse of Mount Makushin, a sometimes-smoking volcano rising nearly 1,830 meters high.
At the Museum of the Aleutians, you’ll learn about the local indigenous people, the Unangan. Visit the Russian Orthodox Cathedral or the World War II Museum, which commemorates the 1942 battle that took place here.

Keep an eye out for bald eagles and puffins. On land, foxes, lemmings, and wild horses are abundant, while whales, sea lions, and porpoises inhabit the waters. Dutch Harbor is also the filming location of the reality TV series Deadliest Catch, which follows crab fishermen working in extreme conditions.

It was settled by the Unangax^ people in 1833 but was abandoned in 1969, as subsistence fishing proved insufficient for survival. Today, the few remaining wooden buildings are the only evidence that people once lived here.

Surrounded by the Tongass National Forest, Sitka is only accessible by sea or air. Step out on the... more+ deck to enjoy the view of the Sisters Mountains and the volcano of Mount Edgecumbe.
Inhabited by the Lingít people for 10,000 years, the city was colonized by Russian explorers at the turn of the 19th century before being sold to the United States after Russia's defeat in the Crimean War. Today, Sitka's roots are deeply embedded in these three cultures.

A visit to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral and the Russian Bishop's House is recommended. Admire the totems carved by the Haida and Lingít at Sitka National Historical Park and take the hiking trail through the forest to the ocean.
