Frequently asked questions

Can I book a one-way trip for my river cruise?
Yes, you can choose a one-way trip for your river cruise. However, please note the following restrictions if you opt for this option:
  1. You will be charged an additional fee of between €100 and €200, covering the cost of returning the boat (driver + fuel).
  2. If you arrived by car, you will need to either arrange a taxi to return to the departure port at the end of the cruise (approximately €100–€150 depending on the distance) or pay an additional fee for “transfer of your vehicle to the arrival base.” In the latter case, an employee of the rental company will drive your car to the arrival base (minimum €250 for their fee and return taxi fare). Please note that rental companies are not insured to transport heavy vehicles (trucks, RVs, cars with trailers) or motorcycles.
  3. Your arrival port must be a port where the rental company has staff to greet you and handle the disembarkation formalities.
  4. The choice of boat is limited, because to make a one-way trip, the boat you want must be available at least two days after the end of your cruise to make the return trip. If it is already booked immediately after your dates, a one-way trip is not possible.

That is why we recommend taking a round-trip, especially for a first-time experience: it is 1) much simpler, 2) more economical, and 3) it gives you more options to find the ideal boat. Furthermore, don’t assume that a round-trip is boring just because you’re passing through the same places again. In fact, you’ll make different stops on the outbound and return legs, and you won’t see the scenery in the same way at all!
How long does it take to pass through a lock?
To pass through a lock, allow about 20 minutes to enter the lock chamber, tie up, wait for the water level to rise or fall, and then exit the chamber. During busy periods, you may have to wait in line before entering.

If the thought of having to stop regularly to pass through locks worries you, remind yourself that you should enjoy the experience because you won’t be doing it every day. It’s a unique experience, characteristic of river cruising and its history, during which you’ll take turns handling the steering, mooring, and possibly operating the lock if there’s no lock keeper.

If, despite all this, you’re really looking for a cruise with very few or no locks, we can offer you routes with little or no elevation changes, such as the Camargue (no locks), the Grande Saône in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, the Lot, or the Shannon River in Ireland.

Please note that locks are generally closed on public holidays such as May 1 and July 14.

Can I bring a pet on board a houseboat?
Riverboat rental companies allow pets (dogs, cats, small animals) on board; some do so free of charge (such as Les Canalous, where pets are welcome on board—up to two per boat), while others charge a flat fee averaging around 50 euros (80 euros at LeBoat). Make sure your pet can swim.

Be careful when passing through locks, as this can be dangerous for your pet if it falls into the water. We recommend keeping your pet on a leash and watching it closely during this time!
Additionally, if you’re traveling abroad, we encourage you to research the necessary precautions. In particular, the country will likely require that your pet be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies.

How fast does a riverboat travel? How far can it travel in a day?
A houseboat travels at a speed of between 8 and 10 km/h. We recommend spending about 4 hours a day on the water so you can really enjoy your stops along the way. A common beginner’s mistake is planning an itinerary that’s too ambitious in terms of distance. That’s the surest way to turn your vacation into a race against the clock filled with unnecessary stress.

To plan your itinerary, use the excellent FluviaCap website.
Am I allowed to fish during a river cruise?
Yes, provided you have the proper permits
  1. On a canal, night fishing in freshwater is prohibited. It may begin half an hour before sunrise and continue until half an hour after sunset.
  1. Except for June 1 (the annual fishing promotion day), freshwater anglers must hold a valid fishing license for the area where they are fishing.
You must visit the “fishing license” website: www.cartedepeche.fr/. Then, select the “weekly” license from the list and specify the area where you will be fishing. The site will direct you to purchase a license from an association in the region of your choice.
The license is available year-round.
