Your journey begins in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. A vibrant, cosmopolitan metropolis... more+ known for its rich cultural heritage, passion for tango and eclectic architecture blending European and modern styles. The city, often dubbed “the Paris of South America”, is animated by its many distinct neighborhoods, such as La Boca, famous for its colorful houses and street shows, or Palermo, renowned for its trendy cafés and verdant parks. Buenos Aires is also an artistic and literary center, with numerous museums, theaters and iconic bookstores.

The captain and crew welcome us aboard for our first night in the Antipodes. The end of the world is already reversing our perspectives: the city is tiny and the horizon immense. This evening, we set sail through the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego's most important maritime route - apart from the Strait of Magellan.

Depending on weather conditions, we have two days - perhaps a little less - to prepare for the big... more+ meeting, the big thrill you've come to the Deep South for. During briefings and your first conferences, the expedition team will stimulate your spirit of exploration. This is inseparable from the preservation of the environment, our common leitmotiv.
So, as sailors aware of our impact on the world, we're taking advantage of this crossing to clean our equipment of anything that might pollute the Antarctic when we land. Once cleaned up, gloves and bonnet are also useful for heading out on deck to admire the synchronized ballet of waves and birds. Cape damselflies, giant petrels and albatrosses are all on board. Their tireless flight sets our course.

During these five full days, the boat explores from wonder to wonder. Decisions on where to stop... more+ are taken by the captain and expedition leader according to sea and weather conditions. This day-by-day adjustable program allows us to seize every unexpected encounter at sea. The Brabant and Antwerp Islands are renowned as a haven from the storms of the Southern Ocean, attracting not only ourselves but also sea creatures such as humpback and minke whales, who also find refuge in the calm of Gerlache Strait. Here, we have the chance to admire these majestic marine mammals feeding, both imposing and graceful.

A little further on, a zodiac ride takes us into the heart of the pack ice broken up by the return... more+ of the austral summer: our naturalist guides teach us to read the accidents of this icy geometry and to distinguish the black shapes of blue-eyed cormorants on the dark rock of the cliffs.
We listen alternately to the crackling of an impressive glacier and the yelping of nest-building penguins. And if a seal (in which, thanks to our naturalists' briefings, we can now recognize a Weddell) lazes on an ice cube within range, our exploration takes on the air of an intimate conversation with wildlife.

Our landings, as numerous as possible, are all "feet in the water" and of course feet in boots.... more+ This allows us to access remote areas without the need for a dock or pontoon. In Port Charcot, for example, we often have to slalom through the icebergs in a zodiac to reach the shores where the first French Antarctic expedition wintered (1905).
Sometimes, ice conditions make it impossible to "drop the zodiacs", so it's aboard the ship itself that we begin the ascent of the Lemaire Channel. A moment of great intensity, shared by the captain and officers as they open the bridge to us. Watching the "bourguignons" (ice cubes the size of a barrel of burgundy) plunge and give way under the bow is a rare experience, worthy of the audacity of the sailors of yesteryear.

Just as heroic are the British researchers at the Port Lockroy base, who spend the entire austral... more+ summer in the heart of the Peninsula. They welcome us in the only store for thousands of kilometers, where they send postcards from the southernmost post office in the world. Spending a few hours with us on board, they talk about their daily "summering" under a sun that never really sets.
Cuverville Island could be your last stop on the Peninsula before heading for the Shetland archipelago. From its hilltop, a breathtaking panorama opens up over the Gerlache Strait. But nothing is certain about our stopovers, and any deviation from the planned route is permitted - and welcome!

The boat is already heading north, towards civilization. We find the imprint of civilization on... more+ Deception Island, in the form of the former whaling station at Whalers Bay. From a distance, its remains are impressive: furnaces for melting whale blubber, wooden houses for the workers, a cemetery for those lost at sea during this dangerous industry. Antarctica is now finished with this era of massacres, as damaging to human life as to the survival of species. What remains is the poetry of the ruins. At the exit of the Caldera, a colony of chinstrap penguins has taken up residence.
This completes the animal panorama of our cruise. Weather permitting, the expedition team offers a hike to the heights of the island, where you can spend a few more hours at one with this untouched nature.

The boat sets off again through the Drake Passage. Crossing the Antarctic Convergence, the line... more+ beyond which water temperatures rise, we leave the Southern Ocean for the South Atlantic. We enter the world of the howling 50th and the roaring 40th. Sometimes, all the "beasts" are tamed and the crossing is a gentle return to reality.
Last lectures given by our naturalists, last exchanges of photos, addresses, contacts... So that the end of the journey is not the end of the voyage.
