Your expedition ship awaits you in Valparaíso, the ‘Jewel of the Pacific’. Built on steep... more+ hills overlooking the ocean, this UNESCO-listed city is well worth a visit. Full of attractions, the city is an exhilarating labyrinth of winding streets, colourful houses and mercados brimming with local produce. Why not take the funicular up to Cerro Alegre and Concepción? After collecting your expedition jacket and meeting your expedition team, it's time to find your cabin and explore the ship before enjoying the first of many delicious meals on board as our ship sets sail.

Valparaiso Humboldt current
Prepare for the adventures ahead as we spend a day at sea. cruising south. Take the opportunity to... more+ get to know your ship better, perhaps trying out some of its facilities such as the hot tubs or sauna. There will also be lectures to attend and new friends to be made. Our journey takes us through the rich waters of the Humboldt Current as we pass over the Peruvian trench – a tectonically active, 5,000-foot-deep gouge in the seafloor. The deep water and swift-moving currents bring a variety of wildlife to the area. Your Expedition Team will tell you more about the Humboldt Current’s importance to the marine ecosystem, and help you spot birdlife like Peruvian Boobies, Brown Boobies, and various species of whales.

Stroll along the wide sandy beach and, if the Feria Costumbrista market is open, you can sample traditional snacks such as empanadas, anticuchos and churros. In addition to the city, the ruins of the old Spanish fort and the museum dedicated to it are well worth a visit. Here you can learn about the history of the region, before taking a walk around the lighthouse. There are magnificent views over the river and the bay.

Nestling in the heart of the lush vegetation of the island of Chiloé, Castro is Chile's third... more+ oldest town. It is also home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites: the San Francisco church and the Nuestra Señora de Gracia de Nercón church. The former is one of the country's oldest colonial buildings and has survived 15 major earthquakes. Get your camera ready to capture the town's colourful palafitos, houses built on stilts along the seafront. For an insight into local history and culture, visit the Museo Regional de Castro and the Museum of Modern Art.

Whales, seabirds, seals and much more are likely to be spotted as you sail. Take in the scenery from the panoramic sauna or the hot tubs and infinity pool on deck, or enjoy the cuisine on board before relaxing in the Explorer Lounge & Bar. Your expedition team will be offering fascinating talks on a wide range of subjects, and our on-board photographer will be offering advice on expedition photography.

We head off the beaten track to visit the remote village of Caleta Tortel. Situated at the mouth of... more+ the Río Baker, Chile's largest river, this charming village is home to barely 500 people. There are no streets here. A labyrinth of boardwalks winds through this close-knit community, above the water and at the foot of the mountain. Conditions permitting, you can venture out onto the milky blue waters in a kayak. As you explore the village, you'll meet locals selling handicrafts and you might even catch a performance by folk dancers.

Caleta Tortel White Narrows
We'll be spending the next two days criss-crossing the labyrinth of Chilean fjords. Tide... more+ permitting, we hope to visit Puerto Edén, an enchanting village accessible only by sea. The 250 inhabitants of this village are among the last representatives of the Kawésqar indigenous people, giving you a fascinating insight into Patagonian culture. Alternatively, we can spend the day sailing through the majestic fjords, admiring the magnificent scenery and spotting wildlife. We might even take the opportunity to launch our expedition boats and explore more closely. Get ready for some unexpected adventures!

The next day, depending on the tide, we'll sail through the White Narrows to Puerto Natales. Today you'll wake up in Puerto Natales, the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park. The rugged... more+ landscape is made up of steppes, forests and deserts, punctuated by glaciers and lakes, and you can choose to explore it by panoramic bus or on foot. This is the territory of Andean animals such as guanacos, rheas and the elusive puma. Look out for Chilean flamingos and the mighty Andean condor. A mosaic of bars, restaurants and outdoor activity shops, Puerto Natales attracts hikers and adventurers of all kinds. Visit the craft village of Etherh Aike or stroll along the postcard-perfect seafront promenade.

Our objective for the day is a scenic cruise through the Garibaldi fjord, in the Alberto de... more+ Agostini National Park, to the Garibaldi glacier. Here, the Andes plunge into the Pacific and imposing glaciers pour their ice into the magnificent fjords. The region is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: its teeming waters are home to seals, sea lions and numerous seabirds, including the impressive Andean condor. Conditions permitting, we will reach the Garibaldi Glacier at the head of the fjord, one of Chile's most impressive glaciers.

Garibaldi Puerto Williams
Soak up the peaceful atmosphere of Puerto Williams, another contender for the title of world's... more+ southernmost city. Visit the Martin Gusinde Anthropological Museum, where you can admire indigenous Yaghan artefacts, maps, photographs and a traditional canoe. You'll also find a replica of the bow of the Yelcho, the ship that came to the rescue of Shackleton's men in 1916. Take a walk through this exceptional landscape, either on your own or as part of an optional guided tour. You may be able to take a kayak trip if the weather is fine, and we recommend that birdwatchers have their binoculars to hand to observe a variety of seabirds, including the mighty albatross.

Today we cross the Beagle Channel and sail to the southernmost tip of South America, Cape Horn. The... more+ rocky walls of the channel plunge sheer into the icy blue waters of this remote wilderness. You may be lucky enough to spot Peale's dolphins, a rare and endemic species, as well as other wildlife. Cape Horn is where the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific collide, creating powerful waves. In the past, even the most seasoned sailors would tremble as they rounded the cape. But with our modern instruments, we'll try to land safely on the cape and explore it... conditions permitting, of course. Your expedition cruise continues through legendary waterways to Ushuaia, our final port of call.

Dominated by the imposing Martial Glacier, Ushuaia vies for the title of the most southerly city in the world. From here, you'll catch a flight to Buenos Aires, but that's not necessarily the end of your journey.
