Wadi el Arab Amada Kasr Ibrim Toshka

The visit to the Amada site is particularly rich, especially with the discovery of its temple, which was relocated in a single block during the construction of the dam. Our guide will explain the technique used in detail. Guests will be able to recreate the Abu Simbel miracle in the naos of the Temple of Derr, the "little Abu." At the end of the visit, guests can enjoy a traditional Nubian coffee on site and see a lake crocodile up close.

The Temple of Amada: This temple, dedicated to Amun and Re-Horakhty, was built under Thutmose III and his son, Amenhotep II (sanctuary and vestibule). Thutmose IV added the hypostyle hall, and Seti I built the pylon. Seti I and his son Ramses II later contributed restorations and decorative elements.

The rock-cut Temple of Derr (originally located on the east bank): This 33-meter-long speos was built by Ramses II during the second half of his reign and is dedicated to Amun-Re. Its layout and orientation are identical to those of Abu Simbel, except for the monumental scale and the four colossal statues. Inside the sanctuary, you can see the same seated gods in the niche: Re-Horakhty, the deified Ramses II, Amun-Re, and Ptah.

The funerary chapel of the Viceroy of Nubia, Pennout: "Royal Son of Kush" under Ramses VI (20th Dynasty), Pennout was buried at Aniba, on the west bank opposite Qasr Ibrim. His tomb consists of a single chamber.

You’ll have some free time to enjoy a well-deserved swim! Then, navigation resumes.

Stop near the ruins of the fortress of Qasr Ibrim: This fortified city once stood atop a sandstone plateau on the eastern bank of the Nile, about 80 meters above the river. It overlooked the plain of Aniba (on the west bank), which served as an administrative center and residence of the Viceroys of Nubia under Egyptian rule. Today, the reservoir of the High Dam has submerged about 60 meters of the site’s elevation, and Qasr Ibrim is no longer the imposing stronghold it once was. Located 240 km from Aswan and 50 km from the Sudanese border, Qasr Ibrim was a prominent site in Lower Nubia for over three millennia.
As access to the site is not always possible, our guide will recount its history from the boat deck.
