Meet your guides at Heidelberg Castle, where they will show you the exterior of this magnificent, partly ruined pink sandstone castle. Since the end of the 18th century, the castle ruins have inspired painters and poets, who saw them as a symbol of the greatness and decadence of human endeavors. Goethe, Hölderlin, Uhland and Eichendorff celebrated the castle landscape, while many painters chose it as their motif. Also discover the geometric terraces of the Palatinate garden, the "Hortus Palatinus", once considered the "eighth wonder of the world". Your guides will take you on a tour of the old town. Admire the exterior of the Church of the Holy Spirit, built between 1398 and 1441 as the burial place of the Prince Electors.

In the morning, optional excursion: guided tour of Frankfurt. Departure for a panoramic bus tour of... more+ the city. Frankfurt am Main, the metropolis at the heart of Europe, is considered Germany’s financial capital. Its towering skyscrapers are home to the headquarters of numerous banks, which is why it is sometimes nicknamed “Bankfurt.” Frankfurt is also home to the European Central Bank. You’ll continue with a walking tour of the Old Town. You’ll pass by the Imperial Cathedral (exterior) and explore the heart of Frankfurt’s Old Town, as well as the Römerberg, whose history dates back to the Hohenstaufen era.

Return to the ship in the late morning and set sail for Rüdesheim. We’ll pass by the cities of Mainz, Wiesbaden, and Eltville before reaching Rüdesheim in the late afternoon.
Optional excursion: miniature train ride, wine tasting, and the Museum of Mechanical Music in Rüdesheim. Take a small tourist train for a guided tour through the Rüdesheim vineyards. Enjoy a wine tasting in the historic cellars of the Bassenheimer Hof, a 16th-century manor house. Then, head to the Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett, located in a historic 15th-century building. It houses an impressive collection of mechanical musical instruments and is one of the largest and finest collections spanning the 18th to the 20th centuries.

The guided walking tour of the historic center will introduce you to several of the city’s unique attractions: Place d’Armes, Place de la Constitution, the government district, the Corniche, the Old Town, the Grand Ducal Palace (exterior), and Place Guillaume II. Return to Remich for a tour of the St. Martin Cellars and a wine tasting. In 1919, in the aftermath of World War I, the Caves St. Martin were founded. Deep within these underground galleries, which stretch for nearly one kilometer, you’ll discover the secrets of Luxembourg wine. Then, transfer to the historic center of Remich, where you’ll enjoy some free time. Nicknamed the “Pearl of the Moselle,” this small Luxembourgish town is nestled amid a breathtaking panorama of vineyards and dense forests that surround it like an amphitheater. Guided tour of Heidelberg
Departure for the visit of Heidelberg. This cosmopolitan, friendly, and vibrant city is made up of 15 distinct neighborhoods and is particularly attractive to families, students, business people, and researchers. We'll begin with a visit to the outside of Heidelberg Castle, where you'll be able to see the Renaissance ruins and parts of its restoration. The castle has a history that is almost as old as the city itself. From either the Great Terrace or the gardens, enjoy an amazing view over Heidelberg, the Neckar River, and the valley. Don't miss seeing the Heidelberg Tun. Built in 1751 by Prince Elector Karl Theodor, it housed the wine paid as taxes by the wine growers in the region. Legend has it that the permanently intoxicated court jester who guarded the cask, Perkeo, died after mistakenly drinking a simple glass of water. You can also enjoy a stroll through the castle gardens, once considered a masterpiece of their time. Built upon several terraces, they were made up of many flower beds, mazes, sculptures, heated greenhouse with orange trees, large ponds, waterfalls, and a man-made grotto. We'll then head for the Neckarmünzplatz, on the banks of the Necker River, and continue with a guided tour of the old city. We'll pass by the Church of the Holy Spirit, the most famous church in Heidelberg, whose steeple dominates the town. Trier is the oldest city in Germany—so ancient that it predates Rome by 13 years.... more+ Trier’s age is not its only claim to fame. It is best known for having been one of the seats of Roman imperial power, one of the major centers of early Christianity, and a vibrant medieval city. From these three periods, the city has preserved valuable architectural landmarks. The city tour continues on foot. Discover (exterior tours)the amphitheater: in terms of size, it was the tenth largest in the entire Roman Empire. It could accommodate 30,000 spectators. Next, the imperial baths, which featured sumptuous interior design: marble-clad walls and floors, mosaics, wall frescoes, and statues. The entire complex of the thermal baths formed a square measuring 140 m by 250 m. We’ll continue on to the Roman basilica. Built around 310, the Constantinian basilica has been in continuous use ever since. From its inception, the building was imposing: 67 m long, 27 m wide, and 30 m high. Over time, numerous buildings were added to it. Finally, discover the famous Porta Nigra, which was designed to serve both as a fortress and as a monument (30 m high, 36 m wide, and 22 m deep). Even Rome today does not have an ancient building of this size in such a well-preserved condition. Take a stroll through the city center, which is marked by its medieval heritage, notably thanks to St. Peter’s Cathedral (exterior). Its oldest structures date back to 326, but the church’s overall layout was significantly altered in the 11th century. Also enjoy the atmosphere of the Market Square.
