Built on several levels, Luxembourg-City or D'Stad, “the city” to Luxembourgers, is one of the three seats of the European institutions and the European Union's leading financial center. Its upper town, perched on a rocky spur, and its spectacular fortifications are a World Heritage Site. Back on board for lunch, before resuming navigation. Stopover in Trier, built by the Romans on an ancient Gallic site. Extremely prosperous in Roman antiquity, Trier was once dubbed the “second Rome”, and its influence was such that in the 3rd century it became the capital of Gaul, replacing Lugdunum (Lyon). Guided tour of the city, dotted with important World Heritage monuments: the remains of the imperial baths, the monumental Porta Nigra, Germany's largest Roman gateway, and the majestic Basilica of Constantine, originally a Roman aula (covered gallery). An important commercial crossroads since Roman times, Koblenz was also the residence of the powerful Archbishops of Trier until the 19th century. Guided tour: the equestrian statue of William I dominating the Deutsches Eck, the strip of land marking the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers, the Schängel fountain topped by a bronze boy spitting water at inquisitive visitors, the collegiate church of St. Castor, or the Palace of the Electors...
