Xouaxange Lutzelbourg Arzviller inclined plane
Departure for the Chagall tour in Sarrebourg. A major 20th-century artist, almost as famous as... more+ Picasso, with whom he was a friend, Marc Chagall is a painter of "surreality." His work, imbued with the sacred, draws inspiration from the Jewish tradition that shaped his childhood. In the Chapelle des Cordeliers, Marc Chagall's stained glass shines brightly, transforming this 13th-century monument. Sarrebourg's uniqueness comes from its location in a region bordered by the Vosges to the East and South, and the Lorraine plateau and its ponds to the North and West.

Sailing towards Lutzelbourg, enjoy a candlelit lunch as you pass through the canal tunnels. Experience the Arzviller Inclined Plane, a true boat lift that crosses the Vosges. This structure replaces a series of 17 locks over 4 km that once required a day of navigation. Built in the 1960s, it lifts a barge weighing several hundred tons in just 4 minutes. Impressive.

Next, visit the crystal factory. Established 25 years ago near the inclined plane, it reveals the secrets of glassblowing. Watch artisans demonstrate glassblowing and cutting techniques. The glass-making tradition in Lorraine dates back to the Middle Ages, with many glassworks operating in the Vosges forests. An artistic legacy renowned for its quality. Continue the navigation to Lutzelbourg. Arrival in the evening.

Arzviller inclined plane Lutzelbourg Saverne
Walk to the Château de Lutzelbourg. The ruins of the castle, a true sentinel of pink sandstone,... more+ have overlooked the village since the 11th century and offer visitors a magnificent panorama of the valley. Return to the boat and sail towards Saverne. In the heart of the forest, the canal flows slowly in harmony with nature. A few locks will brighten the journey. Arrival in early afternoon. Visit to the Haut-Barr Castle, nicknamed the "Eye of Alsace." This ruined medieval castle from the 12th century occupies a strategic position between the Lorraine plateau and the Alsace plain. The current castle was built in 1583 by Jean de Manderscheid. The Devil's Bridge walkway, accessible by stairs, connects two rocks. Famous for its legend, crossing it is particularly impressive. Return to Saverne and guided tour of Saverne. This small town at the foot of the Vosges is worth a visit. Built on a hill, it hides some unsuspected treasures. Not least the Katz House, adorned with beautiful carved half-timbering of naked figures, floral, and geometric motifs. It is pleasant to wander through the town, whether by the water or in the cobblestone streets. Saverne, once an "impregnable city," now has a fabulous emblem, the Unicorn, symbolizing purity and courage. Return on board at the end of the visit.

Evening of tarte flambée, a local specialty, in a restaurant in Saverne. Alsace, the birthplace of tarte flambée, saw this traditional dish emerge in farms. Once a poor man's meal, it is now enjoyed by all food connoisseurs. Remember, it is eaten with your hands.

Discover Strasbourg from the water! We’ll see all the great sites on the riverbanks, from Petite France—listed as UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988—to the European quarter where institutions such as the Council of Europe and the European... more+ Parliament are located. After, we’ll continue on foot to the magnificent Gothic cathedral, built over three centuries. The famous west front is decorated with thousands of figures and its spire measures over 466 feet. The cathedral is built out of red sandstone from the nearby Vosges Mountains, which gives it its characteristic pink hue that changes according to the sunlight and the color of the sky. Standing before the symbol of the city, you’ll understand why Victor Hugo called it a “gigantic and delicate” marvel. It is one of the very few Gothic churches with only one tower. Among its wonders are the stained glass windows, including the 46-foot high Rose Window. The great organ is a masterpiece to see as well as to hear, and the astronomical clock is a Renaissance treasure not to be missed. We'll return by tour boat to the ship. PLEASE NOTE The order of the visits can change. Times are approximate.
