Lectures on the culture and history of the Marquesas will take you back in time and offer a full insight into this ancient civilization. During the cruise, you will also have the chance to learn how to move your hips like a true Tahitian! Our spirited Polynesian crew will proudly present their way of life and entertain you with Polynesian songs and rhythms played on their ukuleles, guitars, and drums. Before going to bed, set your watch 30 minutes ahead – we are switching to Marquesas time.

At sea - Polynesia Nuku Hiva
While the ship is being unloaded, you will be able to explore Taiohae, the small administrative... more+ capital of the Marquesas. Taiohae Bay is where writer Herman Melville, then a 23-year-old sailor, and a companion jumped off a whaling ship in 1842. After breakfast, passengers will disembark and board 4×4 vehicles for the day’s excursion. Our first stop will be a visit to the Cathedral of Taiohae. You may visit the Cathedral or browse the local market for handicrafts. Then, we will visit the archaeological site “Tohua Kamuihei,” with its giant banyan trees and petroglyphs. Your first taste of traditional Marquesan cuisine will be served for lunch. Local music during the meal will provide a great atmosphere. The excursion continues south to Taiohae with its spectacular bay – a giant volcanic amphitheater dominated by towering cliffs dotted with waterfalls. Back in Taiohae village, you'll also find banks and shops. You can return to the ship on foot or by vehicle.

While the crew unloads... more+ supplies—cement, sugar—and loads sacks of copra (dried coconut) and fruit, explore the picturesque village of Hakahau and its church with a hand-carved wooden pulpit. Meet the island’s talented sculptors and artists, and hike up to the cross for a breathtaking view of the mountains, lush valleys, and main village. Another delicious Marquesan lunch will be served: breadfruit, a staple of the Marquesas, with curried goat (a local specialty), raw fish marinated in lime juice and coconut milk, taro, and red bananas. Enjoy a captivating dance performance, including the traditional “bird dance” of Ua Pou.

Ua Pou Ua Huka
This island, which saw the construction of the first airstrip in the Marquesas in 1972, is mostly... more+ arid and home to many wild horses, goats, and pigs. Early in the morning, the ship will perform an impressive 180-degree turn in the stunning “Invisible Bay” of Vaipaee. A maneuver requiring the full dexterity of the captain and crew, it is not to be missed. Return to your 4×4 to explore the island, stopping for breathtaking views, visit the arboretum born from the passion of the island's former mayor, before reaching the beautiful village of Hane. Lunch will be served in a local family-run restaurant. Discover some of the island's specialties, handicrafts, wood carvings, and engraved coconut shells. After lunch, return on board by 4×4. For the more adventurous, a 3 km walk back from the arboretum awaits. Make sure to be on deck as the ship sails along the coast of Ua Huka for more stunning views.

Ua Huka Tahuata Hiva Oa
The ship will anchor in the small bay of Tahuata. The only access is by sea, as there is no airport... more+ on Tahuata. On this leaf-shaped island, the air is thick with the scent of “tiare Tahiti,” frangipani, and history. In 1595, Spanish explorers landed in the village of Vaitahu and opened fire on a crowd of curious islanders, killing around 200 people. Tahuata is also the site of the first French settlement in the Marquesas in 1842. The large church built by the Vatican is decorated with beautiful Marquesan carvings and stunning stained glass windows symbolizing the Virgin Mary. Tahuata is famous for its exquisite bone and helmet shell carvings. There will be plenty to choose from in the village.
The ship will arrive at Hiva Oa after lunch on board, where you will have plenty of time to explore Atuona, the second-largest village in the Marquesas. This is where Paul Gauguin lived and created some of his work. By 4x4, you will visit the largest archaeological site in the Marquesas Islands, “Tohua Taa’oa.” You can also visit the colonial store where he bought his bread, a replica of his sad and famous “House of Pleasure,” and the museum. Walking up the hill to the cemetery, you will enjoy a breathtaking view of Motu Hanakee. Beneath a large frangipani tree lies a tombstone with the simple words: Paul Gauguin 1903. Nearby is the grave of another famous European also enchanted by Hiva Oa: Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel, who died in 1978.

Hiva Oa Fatu Hiva
Fatu Hiva, the lushest and most remote of the Marquesas Islands, is also a center of Marquesan... more+ craftsmanship. In the village of Omoa, women will demonstrate the making of tapa by pounding the bark of paper mulberry, banyan, or breadfruit trees, as well as the creation of ‘Umuhei, a fragrant plant-based mixture used to perfume their hair. After visiting the village, the most athletic passengers can choose a 15 km hike from Omoa to Hanavave, offering breathtaking views of the towering cliffs. Lunch will be served at the summit. Non-hikers will sail aboard the ship from Omoa to Hanavave in the Bay of Virgins, considered one of the most beautiful bays in the world. Meet on land for a village visit and to welcome the hikers.

Rangiroa Bora Bora
You will pass either through Rangiroa or Makatea.
Rangiroa: From the decks, observe our approach... more+ and arrival at the largest atoll in French Polynesia and the second largest in the world. You might spot playful dolphins greeting the ship as we enter the Tiputa Pass, one of Rangiroa’s passes. The glass-bottom boat and diving excursions are available (sign up at the reception). Scuba diving here is considered some of the best in the world (certified divers only). If you decide not to take any tours, enjoy Rangiroa’s white sandy beach and its translucent lagoon. The local "mamas" will have an excellent display of shell necklaces, chains, keychains, and other small souvenirs for sale on the beach. The ship will depart at lunchtime and sail towards the mystical island of Bora Bora.

Makatea: The ship offers the opportunity to visit the remains of Makatea, the phosphate mining operation, and the caves, to cross the island on foot or by car, and to picnic under the cliffs or on the beach. An elevated atoll or raised atoll, Makatea is a type of coral atoll or island, where all or part of the land is made up of an ancient coral reef that has emerged. The term Makatea refers to a type of elevated atoll with the remains of an ancient volcanic island in the center. It also refers specifically to coral escarpments found in all types of elevated atolls. Makatea is also the name of a coral island located in the Tuamotu Archipelago (French Polynesia), where a phosphate deposit has been exploited since 1917.
After a picnic ashore, the ship will sail along the coasts of Makatea before continuing its journey towards the Society Islands.

In this perfect island paradise, enjoy a relaxing beach day and a barbecue on a private Motu surrounded by crystal-clear waters, “Motu Tapu.” Optional activities are also available at an extra cost: scuba diving, a lagoon tour by boat or canoe, swimming with sharks and rays! Bora Bora was an American military outpost during World War II, and remains such as cannons and bunkers can still be seen on the island. Evening departure aboard the navire for Papeete.
