Morning optional excursion: Berlin. The German capital captivates visitors with its diversity of... more+ sights, rich culture and dynamic yet relaxed lifestyle. These contrasts between historic buildings and contemporary architecture characterize the city and tell the story of an entire nation, from the Brandenburg Gate to the Chancellery. You'll see the Victory Column with its statue of Bismarck, the Brandenburg Gate adjoining the Reichstag with its glass dome, Museum Island, Alexanderplatz with its TV tower, and Checkpoint Charlie.
In the afternoon, optional excursion: Potsdam and the gardens of the Sans-Souci Palace. The tour begins with the palace gardens. With its 500 hectares of parkland and 150 buildings erected between 1730 and 1916, Potsdam's palace and park complex is an exceptional artistic entity. Walk up the flower-lined avenues and staircases to the large terrace, home to the Sans-Souci Palace. Then on to Cecilienhof Castle, famous for the Potsdam Conference held here in 1945. Stroll around the castle before returning to the Dutch quarter of Potsdam. This picturesque group of 134 Dutch houses with brick gables was built around 1730 to house the Dutch workforce invited to Potsdam by Frederick William I. Free time before rejoining the ship at Nedlitz.

Optional excursion: Magdeburg. First mentioned in a manuscript in the year 805, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt is surprisingly diverse, with a history spanning over 1200 years. You'll discover Magdeburg Cathedral and the Cloister of Our Lady, Magdeburg's most outstanding historical monuments. You'll also see the green citadel with its colorful facade, the market square with its equestrian statue of the Magdeburg horseman, and the town hall with its bronze portal.
Return on board and continue the cruise to Wittenberg.

Arrival in Wittenberg in the early morning.
Optional excursion: Wittenberg, the city of Luther.... more+ Departure for the city center and its beautiful Renaissance patrician houses, where you'll see the town hall with its statues of Luther and his disciple Melanchton. Buildings such as the Castle Church, considered the heart of the Reformation, Luther's house and Melanchton's house are part of the city's heritage. You'll visit Martin Luther's house, where he lived and worked for 35 years. Today, it houses the world's largest museum dedicated to the history of the Protestant Reformation. Afterwards, visit the Gothic church of St. Mary. Further on, you'll see the Cranach house, whose portraits are now to be found in major museums.
Return on board and continue your cruise on the Elbe. A UNESCO biosphere reserve, the Elbe here marks a unique natural and cultural landscape, along unspoilt alluvial plains, white sandy beaches and wooded peaks.

Wittenberg Meissen Dresden
Arrival in Meissen in the early morning.
Optional Excursion: Meissen and its famous porcelain... more+ factory. This picturesque town is dominated by the 15th-century Albrechtsburg Castle overlooking the Elbe River. Meissen is also known for producing some of the finest German porcelain. You will explore the old quarter, its large square lined with Renaissance houses, the town hall, and the late Gothic-style Church of Our Lady. Then, head to the porcelain factory. It was in 1708 that the discovery of a kaolin deposit in Saxony, combined with the ingenuity of alchemist Johann Friedrich Böttger, led to the creation of Europe's first hard-paste porcelain. The Duke of Saxony, Augustus the Strong, was a great lover of porcelain. Under his patronage, the Meissen stoneware and ceramic factory would become, from 1720 onwards, the most astonishing porcelain factory imaginable. A permanent exhibition traces the history of porcelain.
Meanwhile, the boat sails towards Dresden, where you will rejoin it.
In the afternoon, optional excursion: Dresden, the "Florence of the Elbe". Your visit will begin with a panoramic tour where you will enjoy a magnificent view of the vast green spaces such as the Grand Garden, as well as the banks and hills of the Elbe, prestigious villas, and grand buildings like the football stadium or the VW factory. Then, you will visit the old town on foot, passing through the unmissable Theaterplatz where you will admire architectural masterpieces of Baroque and Renaissance styles. You will catch sight of the Semper Opera, the magnificent Zwinger, a Baroque-style palace, and the Georgenbau tower. Then, you'll stroll along the Bruehl Terrace, nicknamed "the balcony of Europe", bordered by an exceptional ensemble of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture overlooking the Elbe along the south bank.

In the Cretaceous period, the region was still underwater. The erosion that followed wore away the rocks and gave them their spectacular shapes. The region's landscape is marked by tower-like rocks. The play of light and shadow, time and wind modify the shapes, constantly presenting new facets. Visit the Königstein fortress, a unique example of European fortified architecture. This imposing ensemble of Gothic, Baroque and 19th-century buildings is the fruit of over 750 years of history. The walkway offers beautiful views of the Elbe River.

The historic town center is almost entirely surrounded by fortifications dating from the Gothic period. Here you'll find architectural gems such as Mírové nám'stí square, lined with original medieval houses, some of which are among the oldest surviving in the Czech Republic. You'll head for Old Town Square... more+ with its pretty arcaded houses, today Prague's most popular spot, the statue of Jan Hus, the reformer who was burned in 1415, the Town Hall with its famous Astronomical Clock, which makes the 12 apostles appear every hour, the Church of Our Lady of Tyn (exterior), the Ungelt Passage, the Merchants' Court. You'll also see the Municipal House, the city's finest Art Nouveau gem, and the Powder Tower, a 75-metre-high Gothic monument that once served as a watchtower on the road to Kutna Hora.
Optional excursion: the Castle district. A symbol of the Czech people's glorious past, Prague's Royal Castle is at the heart of the country's political life, as it is the residence of the President of the Czech Republic. Situated on a hill overlooking Prague's Old Town and Malá Strana, this monumental ensemble emerges from a crown of gardens and rooftops, and unfurls its long, horizontal facade from which the towers of St. George's Cathedral and Cloister emerge. Here you can admire magnificent churches (St. Vitus Cathedral, Strahov Convent) and splendid palaces (Cernin, Belvedere). Then stroll through the historic streets (New World, Golden Lane).

Berlin panoramic guided tour
We'll leave by coach from Berlin-Spandau with a local guide who will help us discover the history, monuments and fascinating facets of this particularly historic city. We'll travel up the 17th of June Street to see the famous Victory Column, the... more+ Bismarck Memorial, the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag building with its steel and glass cupola. We'll then arrive at the renowned Unter den Linden and head to Museum Island—a complex of five internationally significant museums that occupy the island's northern part—including the Pergamon Museum, and the Alte Nationalgalerie. Beyond Museum Island are the modern Alexanderplatz and its famous Fernsehturm (Berlin TV Tower). You'll be able to go through Checkpoint Charlie, the symbol of the Cold War and passage between the American and Soviet zones during this time. This might seem like just a glance, but you'll be able to discover the monuments that make Berlin one of the most cultural cities in Europe. Panoramic tour of Potsdam and visit to the Sans Souci Gardens
We'll leave by coach with local guides who will help you discover the history of Former Prussia and its illustrious monarchs. In Potsdam, the visit will begin with a walk through the gardens at the Sanssouci Palace. You'll walk the flower-lined pathways and... more+ staircases leading through the terraced garden to the residence of Frederick the Great, built between 1745 and 1747. The personal tastes of the king had such an influence on the design and the decoration of the palace that its style is often referred to as "Frederician Rococo”. Then, you will take a tour around the Sans Souci park by coach to admire its many and astonishing buildings. The first Holy Roman Emperor, Otto the Great, built an imposing cathedral there and elevated the city to the rank of archbishopric.... more+ Magdeburg became a center of Western Christianity and the High Court of Justice in the Middle Ages.You will begin with a visit to Magdeburg Cathedral, the first Gothic cathedral built on German soil, which houses not only the tomb of Emperor Otto the Great but also a number of curiosities, including a charming cloister. The city, located on Saxony-Anhalt's "Romanesque Road," also boasts several other religious buildings: the Cloister of Our Lady, St. Peter's Church, St. John's Church, St. Mary Magdalene's Chapel, and more. You will continue with a panoramic tour of the city and discover Magdeburg's second major attraction, the green citadel designed by Friedrich Hundertwasser, which, strangely enough, is not green but candy pink! You will see this former GDR city, rebuilt in a "Soviet" style with gray, square buildings, but embellished with moldings and reliefs. You will reach the market square where you can admire the Magdeburg Horseman, a golden equestrian statue representing Otto I; the Town Hall and its bronze portal; and the memorial to Otto von Guericke, known for inventing the vacuum pump (Magdeburg hemispheres experiment). We'll leave from our ship for a guided tour of Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Lutherstadt Wittenberg is the home town of Dr. Martin Luther, the Great Reformer, and the city is affectionately known as the "Cradle of the Reformation”. You'll discover the city... more+ center and its noble Renaissance-style houses. Everywhere you turn, there's a spot associated with Martin Luther's life, and various sites throughout the city were added to the UNESCO world heritage list in 1996. A stream runs along the main street, partially underground. Half way along, the street opens out into an attractive square, or Markt, with a statue of Luther and Philip Melanchthon, his collaborator.The Castle Church is the famous church where he nailed his 95 Theses to the door. Luther gave some of his sermons in this church and now is buried just under the pulpit. The church was severely damaged twice during wars in the centuries following the Reformation, but it was rebuilt each time. We'll also visit Luther's house. Part of the Augustinian monastery in which Luther lived, first as a monk and later as owner with his wife and family, is preserved and considered to be the world's premier museum dedicated to Luther, including a permanent exhibition about the time of the Reformation. Luther House is currently closed for renovation. It is being replaced by a visit to Wittenberg Castle Church. Meissen is sometimes known as the "cradle of Saxony". The Frauenkirche tower hosts the world's first porcelain carillon, manufactured in 1929 on the occasion of the town's 1000-year jubilee. After touring the city, we'll visit the porcelain factory. The intricacy of the figures and sculptures and the perfection of the hand-painted patterns are the things that underscore this magnificent form of art. In the museum, you'll take an enticing journey through more than 300 years of porcelain history. After some free time on your own, we'll return to the ship in Dresden. This is a mountain range located on the banks of the Elbe in Saxon Switzerland (Germany) and Bohemian Switzerland (Czech Republic). The region is known for its surprising... more+ sandstone formations and for the diversity of its flora and fauna, which is unique among Germany's low mountain ranges. Crossed by the Elbe, Saxon Switzerland is home to several ruins of buildings constructed to protect trade routes, such as Königstein Fortress and Hohnstein Castle. Some of these buildings later became hideouts for bandits. You will enjoy these spectacular landscapes. Then you will visit Königstein Fortress. Built in the 13th and 16th centuries, this fortress crowns Königstein, which dominates the great bend of the Elbe. Enlarged in the 17th and 18th centuries, it served several times as a refuge for the Saxon court. It held several prisoners, including Böttger, the famous inventor of porcelain. The ramparts offer beautiful views of the Elbe, the peaks of the Ore Mountains, the foothills of the Lusatian Mountains, and the Bohemian Mountains. Return to the ship. Karel Hynek Mácha, the greatest Czech romantic poet, also succumbed to the charm of Litomerice. A delightful glass at the nearby Velké Zernoseky winery will certainly make your walk through the city all the more pleasant. Allow yourself to be enchanted by the rare architecture of the houses on the squares: the Saxon Renaissance town hall, the "Kalich” House with a roof terrace where the rich townsfolk used to meet over a glass of wine, and the "Cerný orel” House, which has preserved its original appearance with wonderful sgraffito work. There are also countless important churches such as the Gothic Church of All Saints with its Renaissance broach roofs, the Church of the Annunciation of the Lady Mary representing the pinnacle of work by the Italian architect Antonio Octavio Broggio and the Baroque Cathedral of St. Stephen, which was built by Domenico Orsi. The “City of a Hundred Spires” was miraculously spared during World War II and its architecture, mixing Pre-Romanesque, Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Rococo, Art Nouveau and Cubist styles, gives Prague its unique flavor. The city was deeply marked by the 1968 Prague Spring–the short-lived season of the “socialism with a human face” aiming at the renovation of institutions in a democratic way–which strongly inspired Czechoslovak culture from the 60s to the 80s. Prague’s historic city center was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.We’ll have a guided walk in the old city starting with the Old Town Square–the busiest area in Prague–and its beautiful archways. We’ll see Jan Hus Memorial, built in honor of this church reformer who was burned at the stake for heresy in 1415, as well as the Old Town Hall and its fascinating astronomical clock featuring the hourly show of figures of the Apostles striking the time, the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn, the Ungelt and the merchants’ yard.
