Hydra is the most romantic of the Greek islands. Its traditional houses, cobbled streets, secret squares, the absence of cars and the use of almost 500 donkeys as public transport, are the reasons why Hydra has retained such a special atmosphere through the ages. The island once enjoyed exceptional economic growth thanks to its naval and commercial activity. The Hydriots also contributed significantly to the War of Independence of 1821, their powerful fleet having participated in crucial naval battles. The 300 churches and 6 monasteries spread across the island, as well as the cannons and statues of the heroes of the War of Independence still standing on balconies, contribute to the creation of a romantic mosaic.

This island is famous for its significant contribution to the War of Independence in 1821. It was here that the flag of the revolution was raised on April 3, 1821. The island has retained its traditional character thanks to its well-preserved captains' mansions, which still bear witness to the island's glorious past.
