In Tasiilaq, on Ammassalik Island, follow in the footsteps of the famous Pourquoi Pas? captain... more+ Jean-Baptiste Charcot's ship, which set out in 1935 with its crew to discover this island of rugged, primeval beauty, unexplored until the end of the 19th century. Along with Ittoqqortoormiit, a village of 500 inhabitants located at the entrance to Scoresby Sund, 800 kilometers further north, the village of Tasiilaq and its surroundings is the only inhabited area on the east coast of Greenland. The island's name refers to the capelin, small flamboyant silvery fish whose presence by the thousands heralds the return of spring. A surprising discovery in a spectacular setting.

You'll be amazed by the breathtaking scenery of the Sermilik fjord, the largest in southeast Greenland. To the north, above the glacial valleys, the Schweitzerland alpine massif stretches into the distance, its peaks rising to over 3,000 metres, while to the south, where it opens onto the Irminger Sea, the relief has been shaped by severe erosion. Three main glaciers calve a multitude of sparkling icebergs that drift serenely in the indigo waters of this majestic fjord. It owes its name to the Inuit word Sermilik, which generally designates a fjord into which a glacier flows, and was only mapped in 1884 by Danish explorer Gustav Holm and his crew, during their wintering in the Ammassalik region.

Aappilattoq (Augpilatok) is a small Inuit village of around 100 inhabitants, whose name means... more+ “Sea Anemone” in Greenlandic. Located in a mountainous region inaccessible by road, its picturesque, colorful houses stretch along the southern tip of Greenland, on the shores of the spectacular Prins Christian Sund. Some one hundred kilometers long, it links the Labrador Sea to the Irminger Sea, winding its way through sublime landscapes such as majestic glaciers, craggy peaks and rocky cliffs with waterfalls fed by the ice sheet. Uninhabited in the 19th century, the village was established in the 1920s, and its main activities are hunting, fishing and animal husbandry.

In the 10th century, Vikings settled here and established a large community. During your stopover in this land steeped in history, you'll pass the ruins of a church whose remains are still very well preserved. Most likely built in the 14th century, it has lost its wooden roof but still proudly displays its four stone walls, a moving testimony to a bygone era.

Dominated by verdant mountains, this small, typical Greenland town is nestled in the heart of a majestic landscape.
