Enjoy the early morning in the magnificent Nordfjord, near Torvik. We’ll then round the western... more+ cape and head toward Ålesund. In the summer, we’ll make our way to the spectacular Geirangerfjord*, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, passing through some of the most beautiful landscapes Norway has to offer. Once in the fjord, you may be lucky enough to see the famous Seven Sisters waterfalls cascading down the cliffs. In the spring, from April to May*, and in the fall, from September to October, your ship will sail to the Hjørundfjord, tucked away in the Sunnmøre Alps. A stop is also planned in the picturesque village of Urke to admire the thousand-year-old farms, the fjord, and the lush mountainsides. The final port of the day is Molde. In summer, there may be just enough daylight to enjoy the incredible view of the 222 mountain peaks rising on the other side of the fjord—known as the “Molde Panorama.” From mid-June through the end of August, the city’s streets and gardens are adorned with fragrant roses of every color, living up to its nickname, “City of Roses.”

Founded by the Viking chieftain Olav Tryggvason in 997, Trondheim is now Norway’s third-largest city, boasting a variety of historic buildings and a vibrant student population. You’ll have three hours to explore Trondheim and its most notable sights, either on your own or as part of one of the optional excursions we offer. A must-see in the city, Nidaros Cathedral—nicknamed the “Notre-Dame of Norway” due to its Gothic style—is considered the holiest building in all of Norway. Near the cathedral stands the Archbishop’s Palace, where the Norwegian Crown Jewels are on display. Nearby, the city’s old bridge, the Gamle Bybro, spans the Nidelva River and marks the entrance to the old Hanseatic quarter of Bakklandet. The neighborhood’s colorful wooden docks, built on stilts along the riverbank, are now home to trendy restaurants. At the top of Bakklandet stands Kristiansten Fortress, which offers beautiful panoramic views of the city and the fjord. In the afternoon, the ship will head northwest, passing the ochre-colored Kjeungskjær Lighthouse, small islets, and rocky reefs. After that, we’ll arrive in the charming town of Rørvik.

We cross the Arctic Circle early in the morning to begin our discovery of the Norwegian Arctic.... more+ This is marked by a traditional ceremony that's sure to wake you up! Above the Arctic Circle, the sun is visible 24 hours a day in summer, while in winter your chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis increase considerably. At 10 o'clock we'll be calling at Ørnes, close to Norway's second largest glacier, Svartisen. The jetty here is famous for its Love Bank, where lovers declare their love by attaching a padlock.
We then sail to Bodø, Northern Norway's second largest city, dominated by the peaks of the Børvass mountains. You can admire the fabulous street art or take an optional boat trip to the Saltstraumen, the world's most powerful maelstrom. This afternoon, the ship will enter the Lofoten archipelago. The 1,000-metre-high Lofoten Wall is an impressive sight on the horizon, as if it were there to greet us. The port of Stamsund is home to one of the largest fishing fleets on the islands. Activity is particularly intense from January to April, when Arctic cod, known locally as skrei, swim north from the Barents Sea to Vestfjord to spawn. In the evening, the sight of rows of traditional fishermen's huts on stilts, known as rorbus, will mark your arrival in the pretty port of Svolvær, the main town on the Lofoten Islands.

We dock in Harstad just after 7.00am, giving you the chance to take an early morning stroll around... more+ the town while it's still peaceful. The ship will then continue on to Finnsnes, which connects to the beautiful island of Senja via the impressive Gisund Bridge. Keep an eye out for the various seabirds, including puffins, of which there are several colonies nearby. You may also spot whales in these waters, especially in winter. We then head to Tromsø, the historic capital of Arctic exploration, where you have four hours to explore the town or take an optional excursion. You'll find Polaria, the world's most northerly aquarium, right on the waterfront. And there are plenty of shops and restaurants to choose from in the city centre, including Mack's Brewery and the Ølhallen pub, a popular local café. And don't forget the trendy cafés serving delicious cinnamon rolls and where baristas compete to create innovative works of coffee art. On the other side of the fjord, from where the ship is moored, you should be able to see the iconic Arctic Cathedral with its magnificent mosaic of stained glass windows. We leave Tromsø in the early evening and head north to the trading post of Skjervøy, founded in 1622. On the way, we pass the Lyngen Alps, towering majestically above the sea.

The ship will reach the town of Hammerfest on the island of Kvaløya early in the morning. In... more+ summer, the island is home to herds of reindeer, which migrate here in their thousands. You'll know we've arrived in Havøysund when you see the wind turbines at the famous Havøyglaven wind farm, which produces enough electricity to power 6,000 local homes. We arrive in Honningsvåg, the gateway to the North Cape, mid-morning. A monument in the shape of a globe marks the northernmost point of continental Europe. The optional excursion to the spectacular promontory is very popular, so early booking is recommended. Near the entrance to the village of Kjøllefjord, look out for Finnkirka, an impressive building-shaped rock formation. This ancient sacrificial site was once used by the Sámi natives. You can take an optional excursion to meet local Sámi, learn about their life as reindeer herders and listen to Joik folk songs. We reach Mehamn, our most northerly port of call, in the evening. If you visit in February and March, you'll be able to see tonnes of cod drying in the open air on wooden racks called hjell, mainly for export. The ship then sets sail for Berlevåg. On the way, we pass the great Slettnes lighthouse, the most northerly continental lighthouse in the world.

We'll stop in Båtsfjord and Vardø overnight, before docking in Vadsø early in the morning.
The... more+ area around Vadsø is one of the most beautiful and popular birdwatching areas in the Arctic, as it lies directly on the migratory route of birds from the east. Keep an eye out for mantled crows and eagles.
Once we've reached Kirkenes after breakfast, you'll have travelled even further east than St Petersburg and Istanbul. You can choose from a number of optional excursions to explore the town.
Kirkenes is where your cruise along the Norwegian coast changes direction and the ship heads south. Many of the places we visited at night will now be visible during the day.
Back in Vardø, you can visit the solemn Witches' Memorial and the star-shaped Vardøhus fortress, built in 1737. The most northerly fortification in existence, it still belongs to the army.
We'll return to the bustling little harbour of Båtsfjord, then make our way to Berlevåg in the late evening, crossing the path of the ship sailing north.

In the early afternoon, you'll spend some time in Hammerfest, once the most northerly town in the world before Longyearbyen in Spitsbergen claimed the title. See the UNESCO-listed Meridian Column, buy souvenirs at the Polar Bear Society, or take the path behind the town to the viewpoint at Mount Salen. We continue sailing along the Norwegian coastline south to Øksfjord, then on to Skjervøy, surrounded by mountain peaks. We'll dock in this vital fishing port since 1896. If you visit in winter, you may catch a glimpse of orcas and humpback whales that gather here to feed on herring. On the way to Tromsø, you can also see the Lyngen Alps, home to some of Norway's highest peaks. You'll dock in Tromsø just before midnight. During the summer months, it's possible to stroll through the still-bustling town in daylight 24 hours a day.

After Finnsnes, early in the morning the ship will call at Harstad, where on the peninsula stands the church of Trondenes, the most northerly whitewashed medieval stone church in the world.

Next comes our smallest port of call, Risøyhamn, then Sortland, where the landscape slowly changes from rolling hills to 1,000-metre mountains.

It was in Stokmarknes that Captain Richard With founded the Coastal Express line in 1893. Visit the Hurtigrutemuseet, which tells the story of our heritage. Like some bottles containing miniature models of ships, this building houses a decommissioned vessel built in 1956.

Sailing through the Raftsund Strait, the captain can choose to take the ship into the narrow Trollfjord. The mountain walls will seem so close you'll think you can brush against them! To leave the fjord, the ship will have to rotate 180 degrees on the spot, then leave again. Don't forget to keep an eye out for eagles here too.
We arrive in Svolvær in the evening. The huge mountain overlooking the town is called the Svolvær goat because of its supposed resemblance. We'll let you decide for yourself!

The ship will then head for Stamsund, past the giant granite cliffs of the Lofoten Wall.

Commemorate this moment with a traditional spoonful of good old cod liver oil! We'll stop briefly in Nesna before sailing on to Sandnessjøen, the gateway to the magnificent Helgeland coastline.
Admire the breathtaking scenery of the Seven Sisters mountain range, whose peaks reach heights of 1,100 metres. The story goes that seven beautiful troll princesses, fleeing an unwanted suitor, were surprised by the sunrise, which transformed them into the seven magnificent mountains you see today. Nor should you miss Torghatten mountain, with its distinctive hole. A local legend explains why and how this hole in the mountain came to be. Ask your Coastal Expert to tell you! We'll reach Brønnøysund by mid-afternoon. Explore the bustling marina as you stroll along the Havnegata. At the heart of the town is Brønnøy Church: a neo-Gothic stone church dating from 1870. Our last stop of the day will be at the friendly fishing port of Rørvik, in the picturesque archipelago of Vikna.

We'll stop off at the Trondenes Historical Center, which displays artifacts found in the region from different eras, from the early Stone Age through the Middle Ages to the Viking Age and the modern era. The museum also boasts a reconstructed farmhouse dating from around 1200, complete with granary, forge and moated church.
Departing Trondenes, we'll take the bus for a scenic drive across the island of Hinnøya to board our ferry at Gullesfjord. On board, enjoy freshly baked pancakes, waffles and lefse and a hot drink as you admire the scenery. The tour continues by bus along the Sigerfjord to Sortland, where your ship awaits.

Torghatten mountain hike
We take the bus through the charming town of Brønnøysund to the foot of Torghatten mountain. Pierced by a singular hole, the mountain is one of the most iconic and recognizable landmarks on the Norwegian coast. According to local legend, the mountain was... more+ once the hat of a Troll king who used it to block an arrow aimed at a young girl.

We'll spend about half an hour climbing gently up the mountain's rugged natural path to the hole's starting point. The hole is 35 metres high and 160 metres long, with a width of between 15 and 20 metres. Enough for one of the ships of the Norwegian Coastal Express to pass through.

Once you've reached the hole, you'll be rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view of the Helgeland archipelago below. We'll take the same route back down the mountain and finish our hike with a well-deserved hot drink and delicious snack.
