Spend an afternoon in one of Norway's oldest fishing communities or take a hike.

Inhabited by a large population of eagles, the region lends itself particularly well to birdwatching. For a truly authentic experience, indulge in an ancient Norwegian activity and go angling in the summer sunshine.

In the evening, when we leave, take time to rest and relax on board. Continuing northwards, we pass the Arctic Circle and celebrate with a small Norwegian ceremony.

We dock at Reine, a postcard-perfect fishing village founded in 1743. These are some of the most photographed landscapes in Norway, where red-painted rorbu cling to a string of islands dominated by craggy mountain ranges reflected in the waters below.

You can discover one of Norway's best preserved traditional fishing villages south of Reine, at the western tip of the Lofoten archipelago. You can visit it as part of an optional excursion.

Located in the heart of this small village, the Norwegian Museum of Fishing Villages traces the development and importance of fishing in the Lofoten Islands over the past 250 years.

A stopover in Tromsø on your way to or from Spitsbergen means following in the footsteps of history. Most explorers and navigators began or ended their Arctic expeditions here. We'll dock in the morning, giving you a full day to explore this Arctic town and its surroundings.

Choose from a number of optional excursions. Familiarise yourself with Tromsø's polar culture and history on a city walk or join a panoramic bus tour.

You can also visit the Arctic Cathedral, which will impress you with its gigantic multi-coloured stained glass window. Or take the Fjellheisen funicular to the top of Mount Storsteinen, which offers sumptuous views of the city, mountains and fjords.

Mid-morning we arrive in Honningsvåg, the northernmost town on the Norwegian mainland.

Honningsvåg is also the gateway to the North Cape, Europe's most northerly point. The plateau rises to 307 metres above sea level, just 1,600 kilometres south of the geographic North Pole. Take time to gaze out over the sea from the top of these vertiginous cliffs, and watch the waves crash against the rocks below.

As we move away from Honningsvåg, we will enjoy spectacular views of the plateau from the ship. The ship will then set course for the Barents Sea, leaving the coast of mainland Norway behind.

Barents Sea At sea - Bjornoya
The southernmost island of the Svalbard archipelago, Bjørnøya lies halfway between mainland... more+ Norway and Spitsbergen. We'll see this land, inaccessible from the ship, during the afternoon, as a prologue to your Spitsbergen adventure.

When the island comes into view, you may be struck by the absence of trees, or even bushes. There is very little vegetation here, and part of the land is simply covered with a carpet of moss and lichen. The only plants that grow here are fertilised by the abundant birdlife that nests on the cliffs. Get your camera ready to capture seabirds such as razorbills, puffins, kittiwakes and northern fulmars flying over the spectacular cliffs and steep slopes.

Contrary to its name, which means ‘island of the bear’, the only mammal endemic to the area is the Arctic fox. The island takes its name from a polar bear spotted swimming in nearby waters, but this is an unlikely occurrence in such a southerly area.

At sea - Bjornoya Longyearbyen
Today we arrive in the Svalbard archipelago and continue north to Spitsbergen, the largest of the... more+ three main islands. Magnificent brown and green mountains rise and ripple across the High Arctic tundra, while rivers of melted snow trickle over the valley plains, shimmering in the summer sunshine.

Simply take the time to feel here, now, in Spitsbergen. You are beyond 78°N, 1,500 km south of the North Pole. The air in this Arctic desert is fresh and pure, while summer temperatures hover between zero and eight degrees Celsius, thanks to an offshoot of the Gulf Stream that warms this northern region.

In the early afternoon, Longyearbyen will reveal itself before our very eyes, nestling on the shores of Isfjord. This former coal-mining colony is now Spitsbergen's largest town, attracting modern adventurers as well as scientists and engineers involved in local research projects, such as the famous World Seed Reserve.

Take time to wander around the town and explore its galleries, pubs, restaurants, brewery and the remarkable North Pole Expedition Museum. You can also choose from a range of optional excursions to discover the fascinating landscapes around Longyearbyen. Explore by electric bike, boat or dog sled on wheels. You can hike for fossils or experience the wilderness at Camp Barentz. And if you fancy trying out snow-free dog sledding, now's your chance.

Longyearbyen Ny Alesund
At the tip of the Brøgger peninsula, on one of the shores of Kongsfjord, lies Ny-Ålesund. Like... more+ Longyearbyen, this former coal mine has been home to scientific stations since the mid-twentieth century. In summer, more than a hundred researchers live in the town, spread across 20 glaciology and climate institutes from more than 10 countries.

Explore one of the world's most northerly communities, pop into the local museum and gift shop, or send a postcard to your loved ones from the little post office at the end of the world.

If you weren't up for the spectacular views of Kongsfjord on the way to Ny-Ålesund, make sure you're on the bridge on the way back. This is one of the largest fjords in the area, with the entrance guarded by two colossal glaciers that regularly pour ice into the fjord.

This stretch of coastline also lends itself to the observation of walruses basking on the shore and numerous species of migratory birds, including puffins, king eiders, pink-footed geese and guillemots.

Arctic fox and Svalbard reindeer may be spotted on land, while beluga whales sometimes surface. If we're lucky, we might even see a polar bear prowling the coastline in search of bearded and ringed seals.

After a day at sea, we're back on the Norwegian mainland.

The first stop of the day is Tromsø,... more+ to drop off any cargo from Spitsbergen and to pick up cargo bound for southern ports, before continuing south to Senja. This island, one of the country's largest and Northern Norway's flagship destination, is undergoing rapid development, which is not surprising given that CNN has ranked it among the ten most beautiful islands in the world.

Local residents often proudly refer to the island as ‘mini Norway’. Indeed, Senja boasts a concentration of varied landscapes that reflect the different parts of the Norwegian coastline, from the sandy beaches, turquoise waters and high peaks of the north coast to the rocky coastline and pine forests of southern Senja and the Ånderdalen National Park. You'll discover hilly landscapes covered in birch forests to the east.

Disembark in the charming fishing village of Torsken and explore the surrounding area by bus, electric bike or on foot, or go on a fjord safari as part of an optional excursion.

After Stokmarknes, we'll... more+ head to the Lofoten Islands via Raftsundet Strait and Trollfjord. The rest of the day is devoted to exploring this splendid archipelago. With jagged green cliffs jutting dramatically out of the ocean and cutting into the sky like giant teeth, you'll understand why the Lofoten Islands are among Norway's most extraordinary places.

Your ship will be moored in Svolvær, the archipelago's main town. Enjoy its shops and restaurants, and you can spend hours exploring the town at your leisure.

The ship continues southwards to reach the midpoint of the Norwegian coast. This is the Helgeland... more+ coastline, an area renowned for its recognisable mountains that have inspired local folklore and many fascinating myths.

The ship will call at the town of Brønnøysund, with its pretty marina and neo-Gothic stone church dating from 1870. Take the opportunity to explore the town or take part in optional excursions such as a trip on a semi-rigid boat.

As we move away from Brønnøysund, the atypical Torghatten mountain comes into view. The first thing that strikes you about Torghatten is the hole that cuts through the centre of the mountain. At a leisurely pace, it takes around an hour to reach the Torghatten hole on an optional excursion. The panoramic view of the islands unfolding before you is well worth the effort.

The ship will stop briefly in the town of Ålesund, known for its Art Nouveau architecture and its... more+ exceptional position on a peninsula dominated by Mount Aksla. If you're taking the shore excursion to Hjørundfjord and Sæbø, this is where you'll disembark, or you can explore the town on foot.

Not far from Ålesund, the magnificent Hjørundfjord winds its way between the peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps, some of which rise to 1,700 metres. Set in the sublime setting of the Sunnmøre Alps, it is the region's hidden treasure and a secret that eludes many a ship.

The idyllic village of Sæbø lies on the banks of one of the arms of the Hjørundfjord. Disembark here by ship and join an optional bus tour or walking excursion to discover Sæbø's charming streets, fjord and mountain scenery, nearby villages and local culture. If you have left the ship for an excursion to Ålesund, this is also where you will return to the ship.

The last day of our trip is fast approaching. What better way to celebrate our experience on board the Spitsbergen Express than with a farewell dinner on the last evening?

Our tour starts as soon as you disembark on the quay, where you'll meet our local guide and begin our journey to discover the city's main points of interest. One of the most interesting sites is the remarkable Train Chapel, a decommissioned railroad carriage... more+ that was transformed into a small chapel in 2003. This is a first in Norway, if not the world.
After our walking tour, we'll make our way to the Romsdal cable car, Norway's longest and most eco-friendly. The cable car takes just 5 minutes to cover the 1,679 meters between the fjord and the peaks of the Romsdal mountains, but you'll feel as if you've travelled to another world. The views from the cableway and the summit are spectacular.
At the top, 708 meters above sea level, we'll scan the 360-degree panorama to take in the unforgettable contours of Romsdalshorn (one of Norway's most famous peaks), the Vengetindene summit, downtown Åndalsnes and the surrounding green valleys. It's easy to see why Åndalsnes is Norway's mountaineering capital!
We'll then explore the top of the mountain on a 30-minute guided walk (500 meters), and discover how the harsh climate shapes the daily lives of the region's inhabitants.
Before returning to the cable car, we'll take time to enjoy a local coffee and delicacy at the Eggen restaurant, located on the mountain next to the Romsdal cable car station.

We'll depart from the village of Åndalsnes, Norway's mountaineering capital. This region is home to one of Europe's most beautiful rail routes and one of Europe's most spectacular hikes, according to Lonely Planet, so get ready to be amazed.

We'll follow... more+ the Rauma River, framed by vertiginous mountains, including the 1,500 m-high Mount Romsdalshorn on one side and the 1,550 m-high Trolltindane on the other. Our first photo stop is at the vertiginous Trollveggen.

We then cross the Sogge bridge into the Isterdal valley, lined with mountains named King, Queen and Bishop, before tackling the famous hairpin bends to climb the Troll road.

We'll make a photo stop at the Stigfossen waterfall before climbing the Troll Road. Admire the beautiful scenery from the comfort of your coach, or take part in an optional walk to another viewpoint. We slowly wind our way up the Troll Road before returning to our ship.

Our journey begins in Reine, one of Lofoten's most famous villages, on the island of Moskenes. Our route takes us past the incredible Reinebringen, which at 448 m is the highest peak in the archipelago. Here you can admire an incredible view of the fjord,... more+ considered one of the 10 most beautiful in the world.

Heading north, we follow the inland coast road, between incredible mountains on one side and the sea on the other. You'll see picturesque scenes of charming fishing villages clinging to the mountainsides that rise from the sea. A typical Lofoten landscape.

First stop: Å. This fishing village, one of the best preserved in Norway, lies at the westernmost tip of the archipelago. Visit its museum to learn more about its maritime past: you'll discover traditional wooden boats, an old bakery and the interior of a fishing family home.

Next, we follow the outer coast for a quick photo stop in front of the charming church of Flakstad, the second oldest on the Lofoten Islands, before reaching Ramberg beach. On a sunny day, this 1.3 km-long white-sand beach will make you doubt you're 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. We'll stop here for lunch and enjoy some local specialities, before heading back to Reine.

Hop on your quad bike to or from continental Europe's most northerly point, the North Cape, and enjoy breathtaking views along the way.

Once everyone has suited up, and your guide has given you a brief safety briefing on quad biking, you'll set off on this... more+ picturesque tour of the island of Magerøya. During the trip, we'll make several stops so you can take photos.

Once we've reached the North Cape, you can walk, or drive, to the North Cape monument to take the traditional photo of Norway's most famous northern landmark. We'll then proceed to visit the North Cape Hall.

Your guide will be able to offer you a short tour of the facilities, unless you'd prefer to take the time to discover the place on your own.

Once our tour is over, the passenger from the outward journey will take the driver's place, and drive back to Honningsvåg. This route offers a few more photo opportunities.

Join a local guide for an invigorating evening tour of Senja on an electric bike. Partly powered by electricity, these bikes are more powerful and easier to use than conventional bikes, so even the climbs won't tire you out. The days are much longer in the... more+ Arctic summer, giving us plenty of time to visit the islands.

We'll leave Hamn and take the old Gryllefjordbotn road up to the Ballsvikskardet viewpoint, where we'll stop to admire the panorama. Admire the fjord and surrounding mountains, perhaps illuminated by the gentle glow of the evening sun.

We'll then head back down the old road on the other side before returning to Hamn. Time permitting, we'll also visit the magnificent beach of Ballsevika.
