Itinerary

Oslo
Domestic flight Oslo/Longyearbyen
Welcome at Longyearbyen airport and transfer to the port to... more+ board the ship, which awaits you at the quayside in Spitsbergen's capital.

Its name is as international - a clever blend of American and Norwegian - as it is unpronounceable - longg-yeur-binn - meaning “town of Longyear”. The town of Longyear was founded around 1900, when the local coal mines were brought into production. For your first few hours on board, the only things to take advantage of are the cosy comfort of your cabin and the admirable views of Isfjorden from your ship.

Oslo Bellsund
If winter is harsh, the short Arctic summer is a festival of wildlife. Beasts and plants strive to... more+ complete their reproductive cycle in just three short months.

And there's no need to waste energy growing very tall: trees here are only 5cm tall! The tundra is sparse but colorful. We listen as our naturalists distinguish Arctic poppy, saxifrage and wild sorrel. We are equally surprised by the presence, despite the difficult climate, of over 160 species of birds. Surprised and moved when this struggle for survival involves the tiny dwarf mergula, weighing just 150g!

In Bellsund, for example, the cliffs are home to thousands of nests, and there are almost 2 million in the entire archipelago. Small but prolific!

Bellsund Ny Alesund
If Spitsbergen is a place of wilderness, we also come across some of our fellow creatures: whalers... more+ of yesteryear, scientists of today. Various institutions are based here, the most active being the University of Svalbard. There are also several national institutes (Norwegian, French, English...) at the Ny Ålesund station.

The Arctic has become the “climate sentinel”. We ourselves are measuring the effects of climate change on this endangered world. We learn that astrophysicists make the most of a sky free of light pollution and subjected to polar night. What a passion it is to spend six months in total darkness, 10 degrees from the North Pole, when the thermometer shows much less!

Ny Alesund Raudfjorden
At Red Fjord, nature constantly appeals to our imagination, much as it inspired ancient explorers... more+ to name these captivating landscapes. The reddish hue of the rocky cliffs bestowed its name upon this spectacular fjord, allowing us today to behold the majestic Red Fjord.

The rugged rock formations resembled ancient fortresses, prompting explorers to christen them as natural castles: thus, we now admire the Ice Castle. Their discoveries, oscillating between grandeur and simplicity, paid homage to Norse legends with names like Thor's Peak or Valkyrie's Rest, reflecting their own epic journey.

A place where geology and glaciology converge was naturally named Cristallia, the city of crystals. Could one find a more poetically evocative name? This new route takes us through landscapes where every detail tells an ancient tale, celebrating the raw power and untamed beauty of nature.

Raudfjorden Monaco Glacier Texas Bar
Thanks to our assiduous use of the bridge's nautical charts, we're able to expand our Norwegian... more+ vocabulary: fjorden means... fjord, glacier is called breen and sund refers to an arm of the sea running broadly along the coast. In the documents commented on by officers and naturalists, some names are more than familiar to us: such as the Monaco glacier - a tribute to the adventurous Prince Albert I, a passionate oceanographer.

The same goes for the “bourguignons” between which the ship moves: small icebergs - the size of a barrel of burgundy, as whalers once thought when hunting in these waters - they are not as festive as their name might suggest. Our captain knows how to avoid them.

A time of discovery, polar summer used to attract ships with less peaceful intentions than this one.
In Texas Bar, old huts evoke centuries of Spitsbergen's inclination for nature. The expedition team's historians describe how, as early as the 16th century, whalers and trappers decimated cetaceans, walruses and birds for their blubber, ivory and down, respectively. Later, coal became a coveted commodity.

Texas Bar North West National Park
In Svalbard, nearly 40,000 km² of the 61,000 km² are classified as nature parks.
This protection... more+ is a prerequisite for the beauty of the landscapes and the flourishing of the fauna. Polar bear sightings are the hope of every polar voyage.

The Northwest Spitsbergen National Park has all the qualities to satisfy our expectations. We share with the crew long, joyful hours on the lookout, binoculars in our faces from the ship's decks. Will the Lord of the Arctic show himself spying on walrus or the bird he wants to feast on, dozing on a rock or rolling on the moss? These exceptional moments are all possible, and often offered. After all, nature always responds with generosity when it shows respect.

North West National Park Isfjorden
In Spitsbergen, our imagination is constantly challenged by the shapes of Nature. In days gone by,... more+ sailors would see a Gothic cathedral in the ravines of a mountain peak and call it Tempel (temple).
This flat mountain dominating the Tempelfjord owes its distinctive appearance to its successive layers of schist, silicate and limestone. The geology of Spitsbergen is a dense subject!
But our naturalists know how to illuminate it in striking detail. For example, they point out areas of red sandstone typical of... an African desert. Incredible, isn't it? Continental drift then pushed the archipelago towards high latitudes, turning it into svalbard, a “cold coast”. Knowledge is clearly a path to excellence and wonder.
