Itinerary

Saint-Louis
Lunch at the Hôtel Résidence around 1pm.
Boarding and installation from 3pm.
In the afternoon,... more+ a tour of the city in a horse-drawn carriage will allow us to discover Saint Louis. Here, you can feel the strange yet familiar atmosphere, admire the finesse of the balconies hanging over the beautiful colonial houses and follow the gradation of yellow ochre hues that the streets offer depending on the position of the sun. The northern part of the island is separated from the southern part by the town hall and Place Faidherbe.
Also on the island: the town hall and courthouse (1st judgement in 1875), the hospital (1827), a beautiful yellow ochre building, and the Ameth Fall girls' secondary school, which has occupied a former hospital dating from 1840 since 1927. The famous Faidherbe Bridge (500m long) was sent to St Louis in 1897 following a huge administrative error.
The fishermen's village, interesting in the morning and evening when you see the huge boats crossing the bar. The Muslim cemetery in the Guet Ndar district. The graves are stakes covered with fishing nets. The Ndar Toute market on the Langue de Barbarie.
Dinner on board and overnight.

Saint-Louis Diama Djoudj
We'll follow the waters of the Senegal River all the way to the Diama dam. This dam is the limit to... more+ the salt water it prevents from rising. Pass through the lock and visit the dam as the boat passes.
Lunch on board, then sail upstream along the Diouling reserve, lined with reeds and home to many species of birds.
Stop at the mouth of the Gorom bolong, which gives access to the Djoudj Bird Park. You'll reach the pier from the boat's tender. This reserve was created in 1971.
It is the third largest bird park in the world. It covers 12,000 hectares in the Senegal River delta. As a result, it has an irresistible attraction for birdlife from Europe and Africa alike. From November to March, three million birds come here to spend the winter; add to this some twenty species of mammal.
Departure for a pirogue excursion. With the engine idling, the pirogue plunges into the heart of the Djoudj, while a fantastic ballet unfolds: flamingos take off in tight ranks, pelicans soar, cormorants dive. A strange and extraordinary spectacle. Return to the boat.
Dinner and overnight on board in the great arm of the river.

We continue up the Senegal River, bordered by Senegal and Mauritania. The Senegalese banks are... more+ rice-growing land, with little cultivation on the Mauritanian side.
We'll spot a few warthogs, then pass Rosso, a border town between Senegal and Mauritania, where pirogues and a ferry take people, animals and vehicles across. The arrival or departure of these chalans gives rise to intense, colorful and particularly lively activity.
Lunch on board. You'll arrive in the evening at Richard Toll “Richard's garden”, named after the French who, in 1822, made it a testing ground for cultivation methods during the colonial era. Visit to the town and the sugar cane factory (ten thousand hectares of sugar cane), the town's main source of income.

With the boat's tender, we reach the riverbank for a two-kilometre walk through the Goumel forest.... more+ Visit a traditional Peulh village of oblong huts built by women. This is an opportunity to discover the many species of trees along the banks. Return to the boat.
We head upstream to enter the heart of the African Sahel, in the Toucouleur Kingdom. The beauty of the landscape and the tranquility of these waters will only be disturbed by the splashing of a few children with ochre-colored eyes, the washerwomen in their multicolored loincloths and the herds of animals that come to drink along the banks. Lunch on board. With our dinghies, we enter a small arm of the river. Stop and visit the Toucouleur villages, built entirely of earth, overlooking the steep banks of the Senegal River. These are the oldest Toucouleur villages on the river, dating back to the 13th century. Visit to Saldé, a Maure village on the other bank of the Senegal River. Return on board. Thiangaye Podor
At the bend of the river's two largest loops, you'll come across Podor, a former trading post... more+ during French colonization. Today, commercial activity is no longer on the river, and its stone quays are eagerly awaiting your arrival. The trading houses lining the quays, with their large inner courtyards and warehouses that once held gum arabic, firewood, ivory and slaves, are today the remnants of a not-so-distant past. Visit the fort built by Faidherbe and currently being restored, and relive a little of this history.
Lunch on board. In the late afternoon, take a stroll around the market and stroll through the quiet streets, or sit on the steps of one of these ancient houses to watch the sun set over the Mauritanian shores. Dinner and overnight on board.
