The Bijagos archipelago is rich in an extraordinary biodiversity that has been remarkably preserved... more+ by local communities. In the midst of a rich natural environment, you'll meet the fascinating Bijagos people, who have managed to tame their environment and maintain their ancestral way of life. Five villages are home to the island's thousand or so inhabitants, who live on a subsistence economy: they take only what they need from nature, grow rice, raise chickens and pigs, fish by hand and harvest oil palm. Traditional housing consists of mud huts with straw roofs. You'll be treated to a magnificent show of authentic traditional dances.
The private islet of Kéré is an unspoilt eden of one hectare of tropical forest in the heart of the Bijagos archipelago. Its unique feature is the development of a small-scale, sustainable and fair-trade ecotourism business. On the island's magnificent beach, a Frenchman has set up shop to introduce visitors to this exceptional natural environment and offer sport fishing, in particular in search of Tarpon, a fish weighing over one hundred kilos. The earth-and-straw bungalows blend into this dream setting and reflect the spirit of the island's owner: authentic and respectful of nature and people.

Covered by savannah, rice paddies and lush forests, the island of Uno or Ilha de Uno is one of the most densely populated in the Bijagos archipelago. In the many villages, life is punctuated by the everyday scenes and traditions of the Bijagos people. Relatively untouched by colonial domination and outside influences, the way of life of this island people still honors animist beliefs and rites such as the fanados, the coming-of-age initiations for young men and women that involve spending four months in the forest with village elders. By sanctifying the natural environment, the islanders protect the archipelago's unique biodiversity.

Orango Island Joao Vieira Cavalos
At the southeastern tip of the Bijagos archipelago, João Vieira is a small, unspoilt island in the... more+ João Vieira and Poilão National Marine Park. Home to numerous sacred sites, this park is home to an extraordinary biodiversity. On the almost uninhabited island of João Vieira, the Bijagos have set up temporary camps for fishing and palm oil gathering. As in the rest of the archipelago, the local people have shown great ingenuity in adapting to this incredible environment.
Classified as a Unesco biosphere reserve, Cavalos Island is the second most important nesting site in West Africa. You'll be able to observe many species of birds, including terns, especially near the freshwater lake. Stroll along the shell-filled beach that surrounds the island's six-kilometer circumference. Some of the rocks are populated by mango trees, which only just come to the surface at high tide. The island's interior, carpeted with palm trees and tall grasses, is inhabited by a colony of wild pigs.

Cavalos Bolama Roxa
Bolama, the former capital of Portuguese Guinea between the end of the 19th century and the end of... more+ the 1930s, is surrounded by the unreal and poetic atmosphere of ghost towns, out of time. Along the ochre earth-covered streets, the remains of neoclassical colonial buildings hint at the splendor of the government palace or the governor's residence. Now abandoned, this hard-to-reach natural port surrounded by mangrove swamps was once used as an outpost to keep watch over the Guinean population who fled to the remote islands of the Bijagos archipelago to escape colonial rule.
The island of Canhabaque, also known as Roxa, is covered in lush vegetation and boasts pretty beaches alternating with rocky formations. The first island in the archipelago to be inhabited, it is now home to a community of around 2,500 inhabitants, spread over various tabancas (rural villages). Long off-limits to tourists, it is considered the most traditional of the archipelago in terms of customs and lifestyle, and rivals Caravela as the most beautiful. This is an animist, matrilineal society, with women predominating in managing and maintaining the balance of the tabancas.

From Caravela Island, you can take a Zodiac out to explore the mangroves and observe black-billed hornbills, palm vultures, kingfishers, weaverbirds and some of the many species that join this region, considered the second most important site for migratory birds in West Africa after the Banc d'Arguin in Mauritania, every year: egrets, curlews, Guinea swallows.
