The legendary Krakatoa is universally known, but few people know where it is located. Situated in... more+ the Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra, on the Pacific Ring of Fire, it experienced the largest volcanic eruption of modern times in 1883. A colossal explosion, heard more than 4,000 km away, obliterated Krakatoa. Since 1927, eruptions have gradually given rise to a new volcano, Anak Krakatoa, literally “the child of Krakatoa.”
Still active, periods of calm alternate with spectacular Strombolian eruptions. The level of volcanic activity will determine the day’s schedule, which may include a Zodiac excursion.
