On Tuesday, it will be replaced by the Hector Pieterson Museum.) Panoramic city tour. Spanning over 1,400 km², this wild territory is home to numerous animal species such as elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, as well as thousands of birds including the legendary African fishing eagle, majestic yellow-billed storks, and the black egret with its astonishing fishing technique. And if luck is on our side in the heart of the savannah, a big cat might cross our path. The history of the park is linked to that of the lake: during the rise in water levels caused by the dam construction, thousands of animals were rescued and brought to Matusadona, where hunting is strictly prohibited. This was the enormous "Noah’s Ark Operation," which saved, among others, large mammals, big cats, and impalas. Lunch onboard. A prime safari destination... more+ in Zimbabwe, Hwange National Park, established in 1949 and covering 14,620 km², offers a unique opportunity to spot the impressive "Big Five": lion, buffalo, leopard, rhinoceros, and elephant. The park is home to the largest elephant population in the country. The train resumes its journey while lunch is served on board. In the afternoon, you will travel along one of the longest straight stretches of railway in the world – 114 kilometers. The route also passes through Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, the capital of the Matabeleland province, and the industrial capital of the country. Dinner and overnight aboard.

Crossing the Tropic of Capricorn, named as such because, around 2,000 years ago, the Sun entered the constellation of Capricorn during the December solstice. Tea will be served in the lounge as the train continues its journey through the thermal town of Warmbaths, also known as Bela Bela, "the boiling place" in local vernacular. Then, the train reaches the town of Nylstroom, initially called "Nyl" by its first inhabitants, who believed they had found the source of the Egyptian Nile River. The vast golden plains of the Highveld, where zebras and antelopes roam, close this epic journey. Dinner and overnight aboard.

We’ll journey out on a safari to discover the area around Matusadona National Park. Bordered by the Sanyati and Ume Rivers, this 1,400km²/540 sq mi-large untouched area is home to numerous animal species such as elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffalos as... more+ well as thousands of birds. We might be lucky enough to cross paths with a big cat or two! The history of the park is closely linked with that of the lake: during the construction of the dam, the rising floodwaters affected the native wildlife although the damage was mitigated by Operation Noah, an initiative which saved the lives of over 6,000 animals. This rescue operation allowed for large mammals, big cats, impalas and more to be moved to Matusadona where hunting is strictly prohibited.
