Today, Phnom Penh is drawing on its past to develop a new ambition as a major Asian capital. In the morning, visit the Royal Palace, residence of the King of Cambodia. This complex of pavilions and pagodas forms a vast architectural ensemble. Visit the Silver Pagoda, which houses several national treasures. Then, continue on to the National Museum, the country's main historical and archaeological museum, which has one of the most important collections of Khmer art. Lunch on board. In the afternoon, visit the Tuol Sleng Museum. This former detention center, grimly known as S-21 between 1975 and 1979, was set up in a former high school. Here, in a solemn atmosphere, visitors can appreciate the extent of the tragedy experienced by the Cambodian people under the Khmer Rouge regime. On the way back to the boat, stop at Vat Phnom hill, a picturesque sanctuary dedicated to Madame Penh, after whom the city is named. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Khmer dance show on board. Angkor Thom also has two important pyramid temples, the Phimeanakas and the Baphuon, the restoration of which, by the French School of the Far East, was completed in 2011.
