Visiting Sainte-Anne

Historically, the city of Sainte-Anne in Martinique was founded in the 17th century around the growing of sugar cane. The city then suffered violent clashes between French and English settlers, who both wanted to take possession of this land. The famous Église Sainte-Anne paid for the consequences of this clash, as it was burned by the British in 1730 and then destroyed again by a cyclone in 1817. Today it is one of the oldest on the island. Don't miss a walk through the streets of Sainte-Anne and its ancient village, rich in colourful Creole houses with wooden shutters. During your visit to Sainte-Anne, you should visit some places and we especially recommend:

  • Church of Notre-Dame de Sainte-Anne: located in the heart of the village of Sainte-Anne, it is a church worth visiting. The building has been subjected to many hardships such as fires and cyclones. Its architecture is typical of the Martinican religious architecture and, after several restorations, it is now magnificent. The history of this church attracts many pilgrims.

  • Le cimietière Marin: with a view of the Baie de Sainte-Anne, you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the sea and the Pointe Marin. You can also walk respectfully close to simple tombs beautifully decorated with flowers.

  • The savannah of the Petrifications: located south-east of Sainte-Anne, in the heart of the Regional Natural Park of Martinique, this place is a true wonder of nature that takes its name from the petrified trees that could be observed in the past. Formed by numerous volcanic eruptions, it is a real small desert that extends for about ten hectares. It is one of the most historic corners of Martinique from where you can admire magnificent views in the middle of a lunar landscape.

  • The local market: don't miss a visit to the market of Sainte-Anne, which is held every morning. You will find fresh fish, local fruit, souvenirs and spices... You can buy original souvenirs and taste delicious local products.
