Last update on 8 April 2025

Sydney is the most populous city in Australia with a metropolitan area including in 2013 a population of 4,757,083 inhabitants spread over nearly 12 300 sq km. It is the capital of the state of New South Wales and is located on the south-east. Its inhabitants are called Sydneysiders Sydneyites or in English, in French Sydnéens.

First European colony in Australia, Sydney was established in 1788 at Sydney Cove (at the current location at Circular Quay) by Captain Arthur Phillip, who commanded the First Fleet from the United Kingdom. Built on both sides of the bay of Port Jackson can accommodate ten thousand boats, Sydney in 2013 Australia's largest financial center and an international tourist destination known for its beaches and its two major landmarks: the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

The place where the first British immigrants landed in January 1788 is still the city center: "Sydney central business district" (CBD), or more familiarly known as "the City" by the locals.
