The Whitsunday Islands are located in the middle of the Queensland coast between Townsville and Mackay, some 900 kilometers north of Brisbane. They are at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. The nearest town is Airlie Beach on the mainland, from where cruise ships depart. The Whitsundays consists of 74 islands, of which only 17 are inhabited. Most are part of the Whitsunday Islands National Park. On islands including construction zones, building permits are very contraigants, and high prices.
