Ponta Delgada is a Portuguese town on the south coast of the island of São Miguel in the Azores. It is the administrative capital and the largest of the Azores economic center. It is also a historic town with churches and convents. It has a population of 68,809 inhabitants according to the 2011 census the town has an area of 231.90 square kilometers, is divided into 24 parishes.
Back more than five centuries, the city has a relatively flat topography and today has a modern and cosmopolitan. On the waterfront were recently appointed the "Portas do Mar" (Gates of the Sea), designed by architect Manuel Salgado opened in 2008 and includes many underground car parks, new shopping centers, an amphitheater and various bars, boxes and other establishments where the nightlife takes place.
