Gdansk is a city in northern Poland, located on the Baltic Sea. It forms with the port of Gdynia and the seaside resort of Sopot huge conurbation stretching some 30 km from shore. Gdansk, with its 461,400 residents and 262 square miles of area the 6th largest city in Poland and the largest port city in the country. Between 1975 and 1998 the city was the capital of the province of Gdansk and Gdansk since 1998 is the capital of the province of Pomerania (Wojewodztwo Pomorskie). The city was formerly known as the French Danzig.
