The fjord is fed by the mighty Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier, which is about 160 kilometers long and... more+ considered one of the most active glaciers in the Northern Hemisphere. Its advance, which can reach nearly 30 meters per day, gives rise to impressive icebergs that offer a constant spectacle. This exceptional site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
During your stay, you’ll visit the museums in Ilulissat to learn about the region’s history, Inuit culture, and the golden age of polar exploration.
The excursion continues to the spectacular Eqi Glacier, renowned for its particularly active glacier front, where impressive ice calving can be observed. This site is also steeped in history, as Paul-Émile Victor and the French Polar Expeditions established one of their main research camps there in the mid-20th century. Eqi Glacier Melville Bay
The ship enters the spectacular iceberg corridor, a veritable labyrinth of ice where immense blocks... more+ drift from several glaciers fed by the Greenland ice sheet and the Melville Bay region.
As you sail along, you’ll pass these impressive “ice cathedrals,” their shapes sculpted by the wind and currents. In the deep waters of the open sea, keep your eyes peeled: it’s not uncommon to spot whales swimming among the icebergs, while numerous seabirds accompany the ship.
To the east, the vast Greenland Ice Sheet dominates the horizon. This gigantic ice sheet, which covers nearly 80% of Greenland’s territory, produces between 30,000 and 40,000 icebergs each year, making this region one of the largest ice reservoirs on the planet.
This day at sea offers a spectacular sight, set against the backdrop of Greenland’s most iconic landscapes, featuring glaciers, monumental icebergs, and Arctic marine wildlife.

Melville Bay Upernavik Nuussuaq
Head north from Upernavik to the wilds of Red Head and Kullorsuaq, renowned for their vast ice... more+ fields and spectacular landscapes.
Throughout the day, you’ll alternate between cruising aboard the ship and Zodiac excursions to explore the vastest iceberg fields on Greenland’s west coast up close. The majestic Nutarssuaq and Igdluligssuaq glaciers, fed directly by the ice cap, are among the most active in the region. Their impressive ice fronts regularly give birth to gigantic icebergs that drift slowly through the fjords.
This region is also a prime habitat for Arctic wildlife. Depending on conditions, you may spot seals resting on the ice, whales swimming in the deep waters, and, with a little luck, catch a glimpse of a polar bear roaming the icy expanses.
The day concludes with a visit to the small village of Nuussuaq, a community of about sixty houses where hunting and fishing traditions still play an essential role in the daily lives of the residents. This stop offers an authentic glimpse into life in one of Greenland’s most remote regions.
