From the dock, hop aboard your open jeep for the short 15-minute drive to natural Lower Bay Beach. On arrival at this sun-drenched tropical oasis, you'll be given a few pointers on how to get your bearings, before enjoying two hours of free time. During your... more+ visit, enjoy the golden sandy beaches and swim in the enticing blue waters of the Caribbean. Relax on a comfortable chaise-longue in the generous warmth of the sun. Feet in the sand, hair gently lifted by a gentle breeze. If you fancy a refreshment, non-alcoholic drinks and water are available from the bar. From the beach, you can see your peaceful ship anchored in the bay. After your visit, climb back into the open jeep and return to the dock. This tour is conducted in English only. As you sail through the crystal-clear waters, you'll have the chance to discover “Moonhole”, a private community famous for the way its inhabitants live in total harmony with nature. The dwellings are built directly into the landscape, and most have no windows or doors. After discovering this village, which looks like something out of the Flintstones series, you'll head to Petite Nevis, an iconic whaling area. Once you arrive, you will disembark from the catamaran and board your coach for a short drive through the historic town of Soufrière to the Old Mill restaurant, where a local buffet lunch and fresh fruit juices will be served. After your lunch, you will proceed to the botanical gardens and Diamond Baths, where the lush vegetation showcases vibrant carpets of exotic flowers. The garden was one of the favorite spots of Napoleon's wife, Joséphine. You will admire the tropical plants carefully arranged along the path leading to the waterfall. After this timeless moment, you will take the road to La Soufrière, considered the only volcano in the Caribbean that can be explored by vehicle: a road runs through its crater. This historic site is the result of volcanic eruptions that occurred 300,000 years ago. La Soufrière is still a very active volcano, and you will have the chance to observe the famous sulfur springs, a testament to this activity. A strong sulfur smell will greet you at the entrance to the site. It has been proven that inhaling sulfurous water has many medicinal properties. Sulfurous fumaroles and steam jets escape from the ground, while natural pools bubble with sulfurous water that can reach temperatures of 170°F. After a short journey, you will reach the Morne Coubaril estate, a vast farm situated on a plateau. Producing cocoa, coffee, coconuts, bananas, and a variety of other tropical products, this plantation has been marketing its crops since the 17th century. It still employs some of the harvesting and processing practices that have proven effective for hundreds of years. On-site, you will enjoy some free time to relax. Finally, you will return to your ship, anchored in Soufrière Bay. This excursion involves little walking. This historic site is the result of 300,000 years of volcanic eruptions. La Soufrière is a dormant volcano, and you'll have the opportunity to observe the famous sulfur springs, testimony to this activity. From the moment you enter the site, you can smell the strong odor of sulfur. Sulfurous fumaroles and jets of steam escape from the ground, while sulfurous water bubbles in the natural baths at temperatures of up to 170°. As sulphurous waters have medicinal properties, we invite you to enjoy a mud bath. Known to detoxify the body, help heal sunburns, eczema, arthritis, painful joints and more, you'll enjoy this unique experience. You can choose to follow the fort's guide on a guided tour, or visit it on your own. Then walk back down to Marigot Bay and visit the shipbuilding workshop. Here, you'll learn how traditional sailboats are made, before moving on to the center of Le Bourg. A snack of local fruit juices and “tourments d'amour” (Guadeloupe's emblematic pastry) will be served during this excursion. This tour includes a two-hour walk over uneven ground, with a few inclines and steps. We recommend you bring comfortable walking shoes and sun protection. This tour is limited to 20 participants. On this hike, discover the arid vegetation characteristic of the north of the island and admire the magnificent views it offers over the archipelago. Start your ascent by following the Conservatoire de Littoral trail for a first panoramic view of Marigot. Discover the flora typical of the island's arid climate, where candle cacti, aloe vera, tufts of mallee grass, frangipani and red gum trees flourish. This superb trail offers unforgettable views, including an exceptional panorama of Terre de Haut. Continue your ascent to admire, this time, the view of Terre de Bas, Pain-de-Sucre and, on the other side, Fort Napoléon. Cross over to the Marie-Galante side to reach the summit of Morne Morel, 136 metres above sea level. Called “Batterie Caroline” by the locals, this site was a strategic location from which, until the 19th century, soldiers could easily spot enemy fleets. From the old fortifications, you can see La Dominique. Then begin your descent, sometimes slightly technical, along a stony path that takes you down to Pompierre Bay and its superb coconut-fringed beach. Your guide will tell you all about the different animal species that inhabit the area, and about the cursed fig tree. Finally, drive back to the village and to your ship. This excursion includes a 3-hour walk on the road and on an irregular path of pebbles and gravel. The elevation gain is 150 meters. Occasional hikers can easily complete this tour. We advise you to bring a small backpack with water (at least 1 L per person), sun cream and light hiking boots or sneakers. The Indian River rises in the Morne aux Diables mountain range and meanders gently to the plains of Portsmouth, where it flows gracefully into the Caribbean Sea. Due to its unique formation below sea level, the river contains brackish water in its lower reaches, which is conducive to the development of a unique variety of plant and animal life. The Indian River is home to flora and fauna unique to this region of Dominica. The local fauna includes herons, kingfishers, iguanas and a wide variety of other birds, most of which survived the damage caused by Hurricane Maria. The vegetation continues to grow and regain its strength. Aboard their wooden rowboats, experienced boatmen will take you leisurely up the slow-flowing river to admire the many species of animals and plants that inhabit the marshy river banks. You'll have the chance to discover for yourself the locations where scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed. Upriver, you can take a short 10-minute stroll through the botanical gardens and visit the famous “Bush Bar” to sample the local homemade rum punch.
