Departure by coach to the Kinderdijk windmills. This is the only place in the world where you can see so many windmills together. This is one of the reasons why the Kinderdijk windmills have been listed as a World Heritage Site since 1997. The main function... more+ of the windmills was to pump out excess water. From the 11th century onwards, the peat-rich Alblasserwaard region (a natural area in the south-east of South Holland) was cleared. This mainly involved draining excess water from the peat soil into the surrounding rivers. Thousands of ditches were dug for this purpose in the neighboring meadows. However, drainage accentuated the subsidence of the peat, so that over time the inhabitants were forced to drain the water using wind power. This is why windmills appeared as early as the Middle Ages. Around 1868, steam and electric pumping stations took over from the mills, but even today the sails of the latter are still turning. There are 19 mills in total at the Kinderdijk mill site. It consists of eight stone mills in Nederwaard dating from 1738, eight wooden mills in Overwaard dating from 1740, two stone mills in the Nieuw-Lekkerland polder dating from 1760, and one mill in the Blokweer polder. The latter mill was built in 1521 and unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1997. Every effort has been made to restore the mill to its original condition. A visit to one of the mills will give you an idea of the life and work of a miller. Please note: the order of visits may be changed - times are given as a guide only.
