How can I pay the security deposit? Is it non-refundable?
Updated on: 26/05/2025There are several possible scenarios:
- By credit card: either the rental company places a hold on the amount of the deposit (in which case you are not charged), or it charges the amount (in which case you are charged). Note that more and more rental companies are charging the amount and generally refunding it to you a few days after the rental ends. In fact, they sometimes receive fines, unpaid port fees, or correspondence following accidents involving third-party boats. This is why they increasingly prefer to keep a few days’ buffer, rather than risk having to ask you for money later.
- In cash: a few rare rental companies, generally in Greece or Croatia, require a cash deposit. You should therefore contact your bank in advance to ensure you can withdraw the requested amount on site.
- By bank transfer: In this case, once you have contacted your rental company, they will provide you with their bank details.
- By check: Some rental companies, in France only, accept checks.
