Rio de Janeiro is a metropolis located in the southeast of Brazil. It is also the capital of the state of Rio de Janeiro. With its 6.1 million inhabitants intramural (commonly known as Cariocas) and 11.35 million in the urban area, Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in the country behind São Paulo (economic capital). It is world famous for its carnival, beaches (Copacabana and Ipanema) and its statue of Cristo Redentor ("Christ the Redeemer") atop Corcovado. Former capital of Portugal (1808-1821), the Empire (1822-1889) and the Republic of Brazil (1889-1960), it has become a cultural and tourist center par excellence.
According to legend, the word comes from a torrent Carioca Rio where living in a small fish abundance (acari) at his home in shell (that is to say oca Tupi language), hence carioca.
