Cárdenas is a city in the province of Matanzas, Cuba. His full name is San Juan de Dios de Cárdenas. Its population was estimated at 86,700 inhabitants in 2008.
It is located on the north coast of the island, along the Straits of Florida, 39 miles east of Matanzas and 122 km east of Havana. Cardenas is a port city built in the marshy shore of the vast Bay of Cardenas, sheltered by the Hicacos peninsula. The city is built between the sea and the hills. Cárdenas is known as La Ciudad del Cangrejos ("City of crabs").
