Valletta (Valletta in the Maltese and English) (population: 6,135 inhabitants in 2005), is the capital of the Republic of Malta.
It is a city of the sixteenth century with many buildings from the era of the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, who ruled the island for two and a half centuries.
Specifically, the current Maltese capital bears the name of its founder Jean French Parisot de La Valette (1494 - 1568) Grand Master of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. It's one year after the siege of the island by the Ottomans in 1565 that the new city will be built on the hill of Xiberras former masters of the island, like a castle capable of holding any military intervention of the Ottomans.
The city has several churches; the best known is the Co-Cathedral of St. John, formerly known as the church of the Knights. The capital is home to many monuments, including the former Palace of the Grand Masters, nowadays Palace of the Republic, the President has his offices there and the Maltese Parliament sits.
With 320 buildings over an area of ''55 hectares, Valletta is the highest concentration in the world history.
