La Paz (officially Nuestra Señora de La Paz, Aymara or Chuqiyapu) is the seat of the Bolivian government. It is for the Bolivian administrative capital of the country, Sucre is the constitutional capital. The three powers are separated between these two "capitals": executive and legislative powers in La Paz and the judiciary in Sucre.
La Paz is the capital of the department of La Paz. La Paz is situated at an altitude of 3660 m. The summit of Nevado Illimani, which rises to over 6,000 m high, overlooks the city.
In 2006, the census determines that the population of La Paz stands at 872 inhabitants1 480 which, together with the towns of El Alto and Viacha, is the second most populous urban area of Bolivia, with over 1, 6 million inhabitants, behind the city of Santa Cruz.
