Fort Lauderdale, known as the "Venice of America", is a city in the state of Florida, the United States, on the Atlantic coast. It is the seat and the largest city in Broward County. As estimated by the Census Bureau of the United States, the city of Fort Lauderdale has 183 606 inhabitants in 2007, is part of the Greater Miami has nearly 5.5 million people, almost a third of the population of Florida. Fort Lauderdale is a major resort hosting more than 10 million tourists1. Fort Lauderdale is crossed by a dense network of waterways (New River and Middle River) and canals were mostly dug in the early twentieth century to drain the swamps and original permit urban development. The presence of these channels is a major yachting center with more than 42,000 yachts moored in nearly a hundred marinas. The International Boat Show which takes place in late October each year is one of the largest in the world in terms of extent (over 25 ha) and transactions.
Fort Lauderdale is named after a series of forts built during the Second Seminole War from 1835 to 1840 by the American army. Major William Lauderdale was one of the officers in charge of the detachment who built the first fort near what is now the city center on the New River. The city develops much later in the early twentieth century.
