Anacortes is a US city located in Skagit County in Washington State. According to the 2000 census it has a population of 14,557 inhabitants.

The city is located on Fidalgo Island, northwest of Washington, about 126 km north of Seattle. It is surrounded by the northern Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands.

Composed of 700 islands and îlots1, the San Juan Islands is located in the Bay designed by Vancouver Island (Canada) and the mainland west of Vancouver Island and the southern Strait of Juan de Fuca and Olympic Peninsula. Recognized by the Spaniards in 1791, occupied by the British in 1792, the land was eventually annexed by the United States in 1872, the three largest islands are Lopez, Orcas and San Juan; they have a total population of 16,000 inhabitants1. They are the resort of Chief Seattle. The village of Friday Harbor is located on the island of San Juan; it is connected to the mainland by ferries and seaplanes.
