Cruise to the Aeolian Islands

Last update on 12 March 2026

Why go on a cruise to the Aeolian Islands?

Setting off on a cruise to the Aeolian Islands means treating yourself to a unique escape in the heart of the Mediterranean, off the coast of Sicily. This volcanic archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprises seven islands each with its own distinct character, from black sand beaches and sulphurous fumaroles to crystal-clear blue waters. In just a few days of sailing, you will have the opportunity to explore exceptional natural sites such as the active volcano of Stromboli, the fumaroles of Vulcano, and the wild coves of Filicudi and Alicudi. Whether you wish to enjoy a cruise to the Aeolians as a couple, with friends, or as a family, this destination is suited to all types of travellers and promises unforgettable memories of sea, fire, and dolce vita.

What do our Aeolian Islands cruises involve?

Our cruise packages to the Aeolian Islands

The cruises to the Aeolian Islands that we offer are cabin cruises or full-charter options, allowing you to discover the archipelago at your own pace in an intimate and authentic setting.
The concept is to rent one or more cabins on a boat with a professional crew who will look after your every need. You share the boat with other passengers whilst having your own private and comfortable space. You also have the option to charter an entire boat with crew for a tailor-made experience.
Many packages are available in terms of duration (from 7 to 15 days) and a wide range of budgets, so that everyone can find the cruise that suits them.

What types of boats are available for a cruise to the Aeolian Islands?

Depending on the package chosen, you will sail aboard different types of vessels, each offering a unique experience:

  • The schooner: A traditional, human-scale sailing vessel, the schooner is ideal for exploring the archipelago in complete intimacy. It can get as close as possible to the coves and isolated anchorages inaccessible to larger boats, and generally accommodates around a dozen passengers in comfortable cabins.
  • The sailing yacht: For sailing enthusiasts, the sailing yacht offers an authentic and sporty experience. Available for charter or by cabin, it guarantees total immersion in the world of the sea whilst remaining agile and close to the natural landscapes of the archipelago. If you prefer more independence, you can also opt for a sailboat charter in Sicily to explore the archipelago at your own pace.
  • The motor yacht: For those who wish to combine sailing with great comfort, the motor yacht offers high-end services: spacious cabins, an attentive crew, and luxurious living spaces. It generally accommodates between 12 and 72 passengers depending on the model. If you are looking for a more independent experience, you can also explore our yacht charter options in Sicily and the Aeolian Islands to sail at your own leisure.
  • The cruise ship: For a larger-scale cruise with more on-board services (restaurant, bar, entertainment), the cruise ship can accommodate several hundred passengers whilst including the Aeolian Islands as part of a broader Mediterranean itinerary.

What activities are available during a cruise to the Aeolian Islands?

Throughout the cruise, daily stops at the various islands are scheduled. Between anchorages, sailing time on what is often a turquoise sea will allow you to unwind and fully enjoy the beauty of the scenery. Depending on the package, activities such as snorkelling, volcanic hiking, or discovering local villages are also included. The detailed programmes for each cruise allow you to choose your dream itinerary based on your desired stops.

What are the must-sees to discover during a cruise to the Aeolian Islands?

The Aeolian Islands archipelago comprises seven islands, each with its own personality. Here are the must-sees not to be missed:

  • Stromboli: The most spectacular island in the archipelago is home to one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. The regular eruptions from the "Sciara del Fuoco" (lava flow) are a striking spectacle, particularly impressive at night from the boat. A hike to the summit is possible with a licensed guide.
  • Vulcano: Often the starting or finishing point of cruises, Vulcano is famous for its sulphurous fumaroles and volcanic mud baths with therapeutic properties. Its black sand beaches and warm waters make it a highly popular stop.
  • Lipari: The largest and liveliest of the Aeolian Islands offers a charming historic centre, excellent restaurants, and a renowned archaeological museum. It is also an ideal base from which to explore the neighbouring islands.
  • Panarea: Nicknamed the "chic" island of the archipelago, Panarea captivates with its flower-lined lanes, white houses, and some of the most crystal-clear waters in the Mediterranean. The seabed conceals fascinating underwater archaeological remains.
  • Filicudi and Alicudi: These two wild and little-visited islands to the west of the archipelago offer total immersion in unspoilt nature, far from mass tourism. Ideal for those who love peace and quiet and diving.

When should you go on a cruise to the Aeolian Islands?

The sailing season in the Aeolian Islands runs from April to October. The best period for a cruise remains the months of May, June, and September, which offer sunny weather, pleasant temperatures (between 22°C and 28°C), and calm seas, without the heavy tourist crowds of peak summer.

In July and August, the islands are very busy and temperatures can exceed 35°C. Whilst these months remain magnificent for sailing, be sure to book well in advance. Spring (April–May) and early autumn (September–October) are also pleasant periods, with fewer crowds and more accessible prices.

Practical information to know for your cruise to the Aeolian Islands

  • No visa is required for French and European nationals travelling to Italy.
  • The official currency is the euro. As the islands have few cash machines, make sure you bring cash before boarding.
  • Do budget for tips for the crew, which is an appreciated and common practice. We recommend budgeting around €5 to €10 per night per traveller.
  • The Mediterranean can be rough in strong winds (sirocco, tramontane), but sailing around the Aeolians is generally pleasant. Seasickness is uncommon on coastal cruises.
  • The official language is Italian. In tourist areas, English is widely spoken. A few words of Italian will always be warmly received by the locals.
  • The archipelago is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site: please respect local environmental rules, including the prohibition on collecting lava stones and the anchoring restrictions in certain protected areas.
