What is a caique? Can it sail?
Updated on: 27/05/2025A "Caïque" is a traditional Turkish wooden boat, either rowed or sail-powered, historically used for trade in the Eastern Mediterranean. Many such boats are available for charter with a crew, typically in Turkey, Greece, or Croatia. The service provided is usually all-inclusive, with meals included.
This is a great alternative to chartering with a skipper for large groups—possibly more than 12 people—who prefer all-inclusive packages.
Be aware, however, that although caïques resemble sailboats and were historically designed for sailing, most are now intended for nearly exclusive motor-powered cruising—either because they lack sails or because their rigging is too complicated and time-consuming to use for crews not necessarily trained in sailing.
