Egypt visa (e-visa) for Nile cruises
Updated on: 05/05/2026⚠ Information up to date as of 7 May 2026: since 1 March 2026, the visa on arrival at the airport has increased to 30 USD (compared to 25 USD historically), payable exclusively in cash. The online e-visa remains unchanged at 25 USD and is the solution recommended by our concierge service.
The essentials
To embark on a Nile cruise, British nationals (and most Europeans) must hold a valid tourist visa. Three options coexist: the online e-visa (25 USD ≈ £20) is the recommended solution for 95 % of customers, the visa on arrival (30 USD ≈ £24 since March 2026) remains possible but not recommended in high season, and the consular visa is only useful for nationalities not eligible for the e-visa. Allow 5 to 7 working days for processing and apply at least 15 days before departure. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the return date and have at least one blank page. Good to know: the visa fee is identical for adults, children and babies, with no official child discount.

Official fees in USD: the reference
The official portal visa2egypt.gov.eg bills exclusively in US dollars. The fees are as follows:
- E-visa single entry: 25 USD (approximately £20) — valid for 30 days.
- E-visa multiple entries: 60 USD (approximately £47) — valid for 180 days.
- Visa on arrival (sticker): 30 USD (approximately £24) since March 2026, in cash only.
Conversions to British pounds are indicative and fluctuate with the exchange rate (1 GBP ≈ 1,26 USD as of 7 May 2026). Verify the USD rate at the time of payment.
The e-visa: the simplest solution
The Egyptian e-visa is obtained online via the official portal visa2egypt.gov.eg, managed by the Egyptian Ministry of the Interior. Allow 25 USD (≈ £20) for a single-entry visa valid for 30 days, or 60 USD (≈ £47) for a multiple-entry visa. The processing time is 5 to 7 working days; we recommend applying at least 15 days before departure. The electronic visa is sent by email in PDF format: it must be printed and presented with the passport on arrival.
The visa on arrival (sticker): 30 USD since March 2026
It remains possible to obtain a visa directly at Cairo, Luxor or Hurghada airport by purchasing a sticker from the banks present in the arrivals zone. Since 1 March 2026, the fee is 30 USD (a 5 USD increase from the historical fee of 25 USD), payable exclusively in cash, preferably in US dollars (bank cards are not accepted). In practice, your passport will bear the classic sticker for 25 USD plus an additional sticker "+$5 / Surcharge Entry Visa Fee" reflecting the increase. This option is riskier in high season (queues, broken ATMs, unfavourable exchange rate) and we advise against it for a cruise where boarding is scheduled for the day of arrival.
If you still choose the visa on arrival, here are the practical rules to follow:
- Currencies accepted: US dollars (recommended), euros (unfavourable exchange rate at the counter), pounds sterling. Bank cards are NOT accepted.
- Exact amount: have the exact amount in USD ready (two 20 USD banknotes = 40 USD if you don't have a 30 note) to avoid receiving change in Egyptian pounds.
- Location: the bank counters are located before passport control, in the arrivals zone of Cairo, Luxor, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh airports.
- Procedure: buy the sticker at the counter, stick it on a blank page of your passport, then proceed to passport control.
The consular visa
It is obtained at the Egyptian Embassy or Consulate in London. The processing time and cost are higher than the e-visa: this route is only worth considering for nationalities not eligible for the e-visa or stays longer than 90 days.
Comparison of the three visa options
To help you choose, here is a synthetic comparison of the three options (fees per person, adults and children alike):
| Visa type | Adult fee | Child / baby fee | Processing time | Validity | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| E-visa single entry | 25 USD (≈ £20) | 25 USD (flat fee, no discount) | 5 to 7 working days | 30 days | Recommended solution for almost all Nile cruises |
| E-visa multiple entries | 60 USD (≈ £47) | 60 USD (flat fee) | 5 to 7 working days | 180 days | Useful to combine Red Sea + Nile or several entries |
| Visa on arrival (sticker) | 30 USD (≈ £24) since March 2026 in cash | 30 USD (flat fee) | Immediate on arrival | 30 days | Not recommended in high season (queues, exchange rate) |
| Consular visa | Variable (depending on embassy) | Variable | 2 to 4 weeks | Variable depending on type | Reserved for nationalities not eligible for e-visa or stays +90 days |
How Filovent supports you on the Egypt visa
Although the e-visa application must be made by each traveller individually on the official portal visa2egypt.gov.eg (Egyptian authorities do not allow third-party agencies to submit the application on your behalf), our concierge service supports you on the following points:
- Automatic reminder: 60 days before departure, we send you a personalised reminder to start the e-visa procedure.
- Verification of your passport: we validate the consistency of your passport's expiry date with your return date (6-month rule) at the time of the booking confirmation. For more details on this rule, consult our FAQ My passport expires in 6 months, is that a problem for my cruise?.
- Emergency support: if your e-visa does not arrive, or if you discover a problem the day before departure, our concierge service directs you to backup solutions (visa on arrival, expedited visa agencies, embassy contact).
- Coordination with our Egyptian partners: for dahabieh cruises between Luxor and Aswan, we transmit a copy of your passport to the local partner for the passenger list submitted to the river authorities.
Should I use a private visa agency?
Several specialised agencies (Action-Visas, VisaMundi, etc.) offer to handle your e-visa application against a service supplement (generally £25 to £45 per person on top of the official 25 USD fee). Our recommendation: for the majority of customers, the official portal visa2egypt.gov.eg is sufficient and the procedure is straightforward. The private agency is only worth considering in two cases: (1) you are in great urgency (departure in less than 5 days) and need an expedited service; (2) your nationality or administrative situation presents particular complexity. Beware of fake websites: always verify that the URL contains visa2egypt.gov for the official portal, and that the private agency clearly mentions its fees and accreditation.
Who is eligible for the e-visa?
The e-visa is open to over 70 nationalities. Here are the main nationalities concerning Filovent's clientele:
| Nationality | E-visa eligible? | Alternative route |
|---|---|---|
| British, Irish | Yes | Visa on arrival also possible |
| French, Belgian, Swiss, Luxembourgish | Yes | Visa on arrival also possible |
| German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese | Yes | Visa on arrival also possible |
| American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealander | Yes | Visa on arrival also possible |
| Other nationalities outside EU/Schengen | To verify | Consult the official list on visa2egypt.gov.eg |
The full list of eligible nationalities is updated regularly by the Egyptian authorities. Always verify your eligibility directly on evisa-egypt.info before booking. Nationals of non-eligible countries must apply for a consular visa.
Documents and conditions
For any application, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the return date and have at least one blank page. A digital identity photograph and a copy of the passport identity page must be uploaded when applying for the e-visa. Always check the latest recommendations on the UK GOV foreign travel advice for Egypt before departure.

Health and recommended vaccinations
No vaccination is mandatory for entry into Egypt (except in the case of arrival from a country with a yellow fever risk, where the international certificate is required). However, several vaccinations are recommended by UK health authorities: updating Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio (Td/IPV), hepatitis A, and depending on the length of stay or travel conditions, hepatitis B and typhoid. A consultation with your GP or a travel health clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure is advisable.
Also consider taking out travel insurance with medical repatriation covering the Egypt / Red Sea / Nile valley zone. Note that the GHIC card is not valid in Egypt.
Good to know: free transit visa (96 h)
If your stopover at Cairo airport lasts between 6 and 96 hours, you benefit from a free transit visa that allows you to leave the airport and visit Cairo, the Pyramids or the Grand Egyptian Museum while waiting for your domestic flight to Luxor or Aswan. This measure, extended until April 2027, can transform a long stopover into a mini-stay. Enquire at the EgyptAir desk on arrival.
Frequently asked questions
Do minor children need a visa? Is there a child discount?
Yes, every traveller, regardless of age, must hold a visa and an individual passport valid for at least 6 months after the return date, including infants and babies. Children's visas are applied for in the same way as adults. No child discount is applied by the Egyptian authorities on the official fee: a 6-month-old baby pays the same e-visa as an adult (25 USD for single entry, 60 USD for multiple entries). British minors travelling without both parents should also carry a signed parental consent letter and the parents' passport copies, to facilitate immigration formalities.
Can a Nile cruise and a Red Sea stay be combined with a single visa?
Yes, provided you do not leave Egyptian territory between the two. A single-entry e-visa (25 USD) covers the entire stay if you remain in Egypt for a maximum of 30 days. If your itinerary includes an exit and re-entry (for example via Israel or Jordan), you must opt for the multiple-entry e-visa (60 USD).
The "Sinai-Only Visa": for whom, how?
The Sinai benefits from a specific regime. This free exemption applies only if:
- You arrive at Sharm El Sheikh, Saint Catherine or Taba (and not Cairo, Luxor or Hurghada).
- Your stay is limited to 14 days maximum (and not 15 as sometimes written).
- Your travel remains confined to Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba, Taba and Saint Catherine.
Note: if your itinerary includes an excursion to Cairo, Luxor or any other zone outside the Sinai, the Sinai-Only Visa is no longer sufficient and you must obtain a classic e-visa. No retroactive payment is possible once on site — you must leave the Sinai to regularise.
What happens if my passport expires during the stay?
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your scheduled return date. Note the post-Brexit rule: British nationals are no longer covered by EU residency, and any transit through a Schengen country (e.g. via Paris or Amsterdam) requires a passport less than 10 years old. If your passport expires before this deadline, you risk being refused boarding at the departure airport or denied entry on arrival in Egypt. Check the expiry date as soon as you book and apply for renewal via HM Passport Office (gov.uk/renew-adult-passport) at least 8 weeks before departure in high season. Standard fees are £88.50 online for an adult. For the full details of this rule, consult our dedicated FAQ My passport expires in 6 months, is that a problem for my cruise?.
The reflex to adopt: plan ahead
Whether you are boarding a dahabieh between Luxor and Aswan or a more classic cabin cruise, the golden rule remains the same: check your passport and apply for your e-visa as soon as you book, not ten days before departure. A passport expiring less than 6 months after the return date, an e-visa not received in time, or a forgotten nationality on the eligible list can block your boarding. Our concierge service supports you on all these documentary formalities, from putting you in touch with our Egyptian partners to confirming your boarding pier in Luxor or Aswan. For any question about your booking, contact your Filovent representative or our concierge service on +33 1 70 80 97 35.
Once received, the electronic visa must be printed in colour and presented with the passport on arrival at the airport. Also keep a digital copy on your phone as a precaution.
