My passport expires in 6 months, is this a problem for my cruise?
Updated on: 05/05/2026The essentials
For most Filovent destinations outside Europe (Caribbean, Egypt, Seychelles, French Polynesia, Asia), your passport must be valid at least 6 months after your return date, and not at the time of departure. In the Schengen area (Croatia, Greece, Italy, Spain, Balearics), since Brexit UK passports must have been issued less than 10 years before the date of entry and have at least 3 months' validity remaining after the return date. Some destinations also require a biometric passport (United States for ESTA in transit Caribbean), a parental consent letter for minors travelling without their two parents, or an additional visa for non-British nationals. If renewal is needed, allow 3 to 10 weeks via HMPO depending on the application route and season, to anticipate from booking.
The 6-month rule after the return date
Many countries require your passport to be valid at least 6 months after the return date of your trip, and not at the time of departure. In practical terms, if you return from a cruise on 16 March 2026, your passport must be valid until 16 September 2026 at the earliest. This rule applies in particular to Turkey, Egypt, Seychelles, Thailand, Indonesia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, as well as to many highly sought-after Caribbean destinations at Filovent: Grenadines (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines), British Virgin Islands (BVI), Saint Martin and French Polynesia.
How can you quickly check your passport?
To help you apply the rule to your own file, here are three concrete examples for a destination outside Schengen (Caribbean, Egypt, Seychelles, French Polynesia, Asia):
| If you return from your cruise on… | Your passport must be valid until… |
|---|---|
| 1 June 2026 | 1 December 2026 |
| 15 August 2026 | 15 February 2027 |
| 30 October 2026 | 30 April 2027 |
For a destination in the Schengen area (Croatia, Greece, Italy, Spain, Balearics), the rule for UK passport holders since Brexit is twofold: the passport must have been issued less than 10 years before the date of entry, and must have at least 3 months' validity remaining after the return date.
| If you return from your cruise on… | Your passport must be valid until… |
|---|---|
| 1 June 2026 | 1 September 2026 |
| 15 August 2026 | 15 November 2026 |
| 30 October 2026 | 30 January 2027 |
Since Brexit, UK travellers can no longer use the BRP/national ID card to enter Schengen and must always carry a valid UK passport. Note that ETIAS authorisation will become mandatory for UK travellers visiting Schengen countries from late 2026, with a small fee and validity of 3 years.
And in practical terms, what will Filovent ask you for?
Depending on the type of cruise, several documents may be requested in addition to the simple validity check. For a cabin cruise (Egypt, Mekong, Croatia cabin, Grenadines cabin), the cruise operator generally requires a scanned or photographed copy of the passport 2 to 4 months before departure, for the passenger lists transmitted to the local authorities and the air carrier. For a boat charter with or without skipper, the passport copy is requested for the crew list transmitted to the port authorities, in particular in Croatia, Greece and Turkey, to be provided at the time of the booking form or shortly after. For a river cruise in Europe (CroisiEurope, barge), passport or ID card copy is requested later (often D-30 to D-15).
Accepted format: good-quality PDF scan or photo of the passport open on the identity page, legible and not cropped. The copy must be up to date: a passport renewed between booking and departure must be resubmitted immediately.
Biometric passport: mandatory for some destinations
Some countries require a biometric passport (passport containing an electronic chip with the traveller's biometric data). This is notably the case to benefit from the ESTA in the United States (transit or stay), useful if your cruise involves a stopover or transfer via Miami, San Juan or the Florida Keys to reach the Caribbean. All UK passports issued since March 2006 are biometric. If your passport dates from before this date, check the « biometric » mention on the identity page before departure.
If you are travelling with a minor
Beyond the passport validity (5 years for under-16s in the UK), think about the parental consent letter: required for any minor travelling without their two parents to a destination outside the UK. While the UK does not have a specific government form like France's Cerfa, a written and signed parental consent letter is strongly recommended to avoid border issues, particularly when travelling with one parent only or with a third party. The letter must be signed by the parent(s) holding parental responsibility and accompanied by a copy of their passport or ID, plus a copy of the child's birth certificate. If the parent travelling and the child do not have the same surname, also bring a copy of the marriage certificate or court order regarding custody to avoid any blockage at customs. Are you a UK resident but a non-British national?
Your formalities depend both on your country of citizenship and on your UK residence permit (BRP/eVisa). Some destinations require an additional visa or do not accept the residence permit as a full travel document. We recommend that you check your situation with the consulate of the destination country from booking onwards, as visa processing times can be long (4 to 8 weeks for some destinations such as Turkey outside the e-Visa, or the BVI under certain nationalities). Our concierge service can point you to the right resources, but only the consulate of the destination country is authorised to confirm the requirements applicable to your profile.
Our position: alert but not guarantee
Filovent systematically alerts you when a risk is identified on your file, but we are not authorised to officially confirm the entry rules of a territory nor to guarantee any tolerance from the local authorities or the airline. Only these authorities are entitled to confirm the applicable rule and any margin in writing. In case of doubt, systematically check the rule of the destination country on the Foreign Travel Advice (gov.uk) website before departure, and do not hesitate to contact directly the consulate or embassy of the country concerned.
The renewal lead times to anticipate
If renewal is needed, allow around 3 weeks for the standard online application via HMPO (His Majesty's Passport Office), and up to 10 weeks during peak season (April to August). The standard fee for a UK passport is £88.50 online (£100 by paper application) for adults, £57.50 online (£69 by paper application) for children under 16. Our practical tip: apply as early as possible via the official portal gov.uk/apply-renew-passport. The online photo upload service makes the process significantly faster.
Emergency cases: what to do if your departure is approaching?
If your cruise is in less than 4 weeks and your passport is not compliant, you have several options:
- Premium 1-Day Service (HMPO): in-person appointment at one of HMPO's 7 regional offices (Belfast, Durham, Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Newport, Peterborough). Passport collected the same day. Fee: £207.50 for an adult, £176.50 for a child. Subject to appointment availability, often booked weeks in advance during high season.
- 1-Week Fast Track Service: in-person appointment at HMPO, passport delivered within 1 week of the appointment. Fee: £177 for an adult, £145 for a child. Requires bringing your old passport at the appointment if you are renewing.
- Emergency Travel Document (consulate): issued by UK consulates abroad in case of lost or stolen passport. Warning: not all countries accept it (the United States exclude it for ESTA as it is not biometric), which can block a transit via Miami to reach the Caribbean. Single-use document only.

The reflex to have from booking onwards
The golden rule: check the validity of your passport from the moment you book your cruise, not a month before departure. If you are travelling as a family or in a group, extend the check to all passengers, including children whose passports have a shorter validity (5 years instead of 10 for adults). Note also that since Brexit, UK passports issued more than 10 years ago are not accepted in the Schengen area regardless of remaining validity, and ETIAS authorisation will become mandatory from late 2026. Our concierge service supports you in identifying the specific requirements for your destination and pointing you to the right resources.
