Egypt visa (e-visa) for Nile cruises

Updated on: 05/05/2026

⚠ Information up to date as of May 7, 2026: since March 1, 2026, the visa on arrival at the airport has increased to $30 (compared to $25 historically), payable exclusively in cash. The online e-visa remains unchanged at $25 and is the solution recommended by our concierge service.

The essentials

To embark on a Nile cruise, U.S. citizens must hold a valid tourist visa. Three options coexist: the online e-visa ($25) is the recommended solution for 95 % of customers, the visa on arrival ($30 since March 2026) remains possible but not recommended in high season, and the consular visa is only useful for nationalities not eligible for the e-visa. Allow 5 to 7 business days for processing and apply at least 15 days before departure. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the return date and have at least one blank page. Good to know: the visa fee is identical for adults, children and babies, with no official child discount. U.S. travelers should also note specific requirements for minors: both parents' notarized consent (DS-3053 standard) for children traveling without both legal parents.

To embark on a Nile cruise, U.S. citizens (and most Western travelers) must hold a valid tourist visa. Three options coexist, but only one is really recommended today.

Official fees in USD: the reference

The official portal visa2egypt.gov.eg bills exclusively in U.S. dollars. The fees are as follows:

  1.  E-visa single entry: $25 — valid for 30 days.
  2.  E-visa multiple entries: $60 — valid for 180 days.
  3.  Visa on arrival (sticker): $30 since March 2026, in cash only.

Verify the exact fee on the portal at the time of payment, as occasional adjustments may occur.

The e-visa: the simplest solution

The Egyptian e-visa is obtained online via the official portal visa2egypt.gov.eg, managed by the Egyptian Ministry of the Interior. Allow approximately $25 for a single-entry visa valid for 30 days, or approximately $60 for a multiple-entry visa. The processing time is 5 to 7 business days; we recommend applying at least 15 days before departure. The electronic visa is sent by email in PDF format: it must be printed and presented with the passport on arrival.

The visa on arrival (sticker): $30 since March 2026

It remains possible to obtain a visa directly at Cairo, Luxor or Hurghada airport by purchasing a sticker from the banks present in the arrivals zone. Since March 1, 2026, the fee is $30 (a $5 increase from the historical fee of $25), payable exclusively in cash, preferably in U.S. dollars (credit cards are not accepted). In practice, your passport will bear the classic sticker for $25 plus an additional sticker "+$5 / Surcharge Entry Visa Fee" reflecting the increase. This option is riskier in high season (queues, broken ATMs, unfavorable exchange rate) and we advise against it for a cruise where boarding is scheduled for the day of arrival.

If you still choose the visa on arrival, here are the practical rules to follow:

  1.  Currencies accepted: U.S. dollars (recommended), euros (unfavorable exchange rate at the counter), pounds sterling. Credit cards are NOT accepted.
  2.  Exact amount: have the exact amount in USD ready (two $20 banknotes = $40 if you don't have a $30 note) to avoid receiving change in Egyptian pounds.
  3.  Location: the bank counters are located before passport control, in the arrivals zone of Cairo, Luxor, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh airports.
  4.  Procedure: buy the sticker at the counter, stick it on a blank page of your passport, then proceed to passport control.

The consular visa

It is obtained at the Egyptian Embassy in Washington DC or the Egyptian Consulates in New York, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco. The processing time and cost are higher than the e-visa: this route is only worth considering for nationalities not eligible for the e-visa, stays longer than 90 days, or travelers requiring an official passport stamp for visa records.

How Filovent supports you on the Egypt visa

Although the e-visa application must be made by each traveler individually on the official portal visa2egypt.gov.eg (Egyptian authorities do not allow third-party agencies to submit the application on your behalf), our concierge service supports you on the following points:

  1.  Automatic reminder: 60 days before departure, we send you a personalized reminder to start the e-visa procedure.
  2.  Verification of your passport: we validate the consistency of your passport's expiration date with your return date (6-month rule) at the time of the booking confirmation. For more details on this rule, consult our FAQ My passport expires in 6 months, is that a problem for my cruise?.
  3.  Emergency support: if your e-visa does not arrive, or if you discover a problem the day before departure, our concierge service directs you to backup solutions (visa on arrival, expedited visa agencies, embassy contact).
  4.  Coordination with our Egyptian partners: for dahabieh cruises between Luxor and Aswan, we transmit a copy of your passport to the local partner for the passenger list submitted to the river authorities.

Should I use a private visa agency?

Several specialized agencies (Action-Visas, VisaMundi, etc.) offer to handle your e-visa application against a service supplement (generally $30 to $60 per person on top of the official $25 fee). Our recommendation: for the majority of customers, the official portal visa2egypt.gov.eg is sufficient and the procedure is straightforward. The private agency is only worth considering in two cases: (1) you are in great urgency (departure in less than 5 days) and need expedited service; (2) your nationality or administrative situation presents particular complexity. Beware of fake websites: always verify that the URL contains visa2egypt.gov for the official portal, and that the private agency clearly mentions its fees and accreditation.

Who is eligible for the e-visa?

The e-visa is open to over 70 nationalities. Here are the main nationalities concerning Filovent's clientele:

The full list of eligible nationalities is updated regularly by the Egyptian authorities. Always verify your eligibility directly on evisa-egypt.info before booking. Nationals of non-eligible countries must apply for a consular visa. Note for Green Card holders: your visa eligibility is determined by your passport's country of citizenship, not your U.S. residency status.

Documents and conditions

For any application, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the return date and have at least one blank page. A digital identity photograph and a copy of the passport identity page must be uploaded when applying for the e-visa. Always check the latest recommendations on the U.S. State Department travel advisory for Egypt before departure.

To go further on planning your stay in Egypt, consult our dedicated resources: our Nile cruise brochure, our magazine article on the dahabieh cruise, as well as our Egypt FAQ which gathers all frequently asked questions about the destination.

Health and recommended vaccinations

No vaccination is mandatory for entry into Egypt (except in the case of arrival from a country with a yellow fever risk, where the international certificate is required). However, several vaccinations are recommended by the CDC: routine vaccinations up to date (MMR, DTaP, Tdap, polio, flu), hepatitis A, typhoid, and depending on the length of stay or travel conditions, hepatitis B and rabies. Schedule a consultation with your healthcare provider or a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.

Also consider taking out comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage of at least $250,000, as Medicare and most domestic U.S. health plans do not provide coverage abroad. We strongly recommend providers such as Allianz Travel, AIG Travel Guard, or IMG Global, ideally with a CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) rider. For up-to-date official health recommendations, consult the CDC Travelers' Health Egypt page.

Good to know: free transit visa (96 h)

If your stopover at Cairo airport lasts between 6 and 96 hours, you benefit from a free transit visa that allows you to leave the airport and visit Cairo, the Pyramids or the Grand Egyptian Museum while waiting for your domestic flight to Luxor or Aswan. This measure, extended until April 2027, can transform a long stopover into a mini-stay. Inquire at the EgyptAir desk on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Do minor children need a visa? Is there a child discount?

Yes, every traveler, regardless of age, must hold a visa and an individual passport valid for at least 6 months after the return date, including infants and babies. Children's visas are applied for in the same way as adults. No child discount is applied by the Egyptian authorities on the official fee: a 6-month-old baby pays the same e-visa as an adult ($25 for single entry, $60 for multiple entries). For U.S. minors traveling internationally without both legal parents, the absent parent(s) must provide a notarized consent letter (DS-3053 standard); this is required at the U.S. departure airport and recommended for re-entry. Both U.S. parents are also required for any new minor passport application.

Can a Nile cruise and a Red Sea stay be combined with a single visa?

Yes, provided you do not leave Egyptian territory between the two. A single-entry e-visa ($25) covers the entire stay if you remain in Egypt for a maximum of 30 days. If your itinerary includes an exit and re-entry (for example via Israel or Jordan), you must opt for the multiple-entry e-visa ($60).

The "Sinai-Only Visa": for whom, how?

The Sinai benefits from a specific regime. This free exemption applies only if:

  1.  You arrive at Sharm El Sheikh, Saint Catherine or Taba (and not Cairo, Luxor or Hurghada).
  2.  Your stay is limited to 14 days maximum (and not 15 as sometimes written).
  3.  Your travel remains confined to Sharm El Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba, Taba and Saint Catherine.

Note: if your itinerary includes an excursion to Cairo, Luxor or any other zone outside the Sinai, the Sinai-Only Visa is no longer sufficient and you must obtain a classic e-visa. No retroactive payment is possible once on site — you must leave the Sinai to regularize.

What happens if my passport expires during the stay?

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your scheduled return date. If your passport expires before this deadline, you risk being refused boarding at the departure airport or denied entry on arrival in Egypt. Check the expiration date as soon as you book and apply for renewal via the U.S. Department of State (travel.state.gov) at least 8 weeks before departure in high season. Standard fees are $130 (book) plus $35 execution fee for a first-time adult passport; $130 for renewal. Expedited service is available at $60 additional for a 4 to 6 weeks turnaround, or via one of the 26 Passport Agencies for urgent travel within 14 days. Note that Real ID is required for U.S. domestic flights as of 2025, but is not a substitute for a passport for international travel. For the full details of this rule, consult our dedicated FAQ My passport expires in 6 months, is that a problem for my cruise?.

The reflex to adopt: plan ahead

Whether you are boarding a dahabieh between Luxor and Aswan or a more classic cabin cruise, the golden rule remains the same: check your passport and apply for your e-visa as soon as you book, not ten days before departure. A passport expiring less than 6 months after the return date, an e-visa not received in time, or a forgotten nationality on the eligible list can block your boarding. Our concierge service supports you on all these documentary formalities, from putting you in touch with our Egyptian partners to confirming your boarding pier in Luxor or Aswan. For any question about your booking, contact your Filovent representative or our concierge service at +33 1 70 80 97 35.

Once received, the electronic visa must be printed in color and presented with the passport on arrival at the airport. Also keep a digital copy on your phone as a precaution.
