Sailboat charter in Italy with or without a skipper

Last updated on 2 March 2024

What type of sailboat should you choose for your charter?

  • Monohull charter: A monohull sailboat will offer you a more sporty experience and allow you to reach secret coves only accessible by sea. For adventure and thrill seekers, a monohull sailboat is for you.
  • Catamaran charter: If you are looking for a relaxing cruise and want to prioritize space and comfort for your trip, we highly recommend a catamaran charter, which will offer you extra stability.

The services offered by Filovent for your sailboat charter in Italy:

  • Bareboat yacht charter: this option allows you to rent a boat for a fixed period, generally by the day, week or month. You are then free to sail as you please and discover the wonders of Italy in complete autonomy.
  • Yacht charter with skipper: If you have little or no sailing experience or you simply want to spend a relaxing vacation, Filovent offers you the option of renting your boat with a professional skipper. The skipper will know the sailing area and will show you some of the most beautiful places in the region.
  • Additional services: Many rental companies offer a wide range of additional services that you can book, such as fishing and diving equipment. You can also hire a crew if you wish, especially if you rent a large boat, which usually includes a captain, a cook and a hostess. The crew will take care of you and make sure you have an unforgettable cruise!
  • Cabin cruise: You can book a cabin on board a top-of-the-range, people-sized boat that you will share with a few other travelers and a crew that will take care of your every need.

Where can you sail in Italy?

Four other sailing areas are accessible from Italy:

  1. Sardinia: Discover the north of Sardinia and its magnificent beaches with turquoise water. The Costa Smeralda is renowned for its numerous archaeological and nuragic sites that are not to be missed, such as the Li Muri necropolis or the Albucciu and Malchittu sites. Not far from the Costa Smeralda is the Maddalena archipelago, a real corner of paradise in the heart of the Mediterranean. We strongly recommend that you take a tour.
  2. The Amalfi Coast: Renowned as one of the most beautiful and picturesque coastlines in the world, the Amalfi Coast remains one of the places not to be missed when on a yacht charter in Italy. A sailboat charter in the Bay of Naples will offer you many possibilities for stopovers with the islands of Capri and Ischia. You can also extend your yacht charter, sailboat charter and catamaran charter in Italy to the Pontine Islands, an archipelago of volcanic islands located 30 kilometers in the open sea from the Italian peninsula.
  3. Sicily and the Aeolian Islands: With flamboyant landscapes dominated by Europe's highest volcano: Mount Etna, which rises to an altitude of 3,340 meters. Its capital, Palermo, is a compendium of architectural treasures such as its Cathedral, the Monreale cloister, the Palazzo dei Normanni and its opera house, the Teatro Massimo, the third largest in Europe. Set off to conquer the most beautiful beaches of Sicily on board your sailboat charter in Italy. From the charming ports of Milazzo and Portorosa, boaters can head to the Lipari Islands thanks to a sailboat charter in the Aeolian Islands. The archipelago's main island offers you a spectacular view of its acropolis and the beautiful cathedral of the archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela. For history enthusiasts, a stopover in Lipari will be an opportunity to visit its archaeological museum, which houses, among other things, fascinating objects dating from the beginning of the 4th millennium BC.
  4. Tuscany and Elba: Set sail for the Tuscan archipelago, which is made up of 7 islands: Elba, Pianosa, Capraia, Montecristo, Gorgona, Giglio and Giannutri. These 7 islands form part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. According to legend, when the goddess Venus emerged from the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, she dropped seven pearls from her necklace, giving rise to the seven islands of the Tuscan Archipelago.Elba is the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago and the third largest island in Italy. It is well worth a visit, both for its historical and natural wealth.

Our advice for a successful sailboat charter in Italy:

  • Be aware of local regulations: Before embarking on your sailboat charter, make sure you are familiar with the regulations in force in the region in terms of navigation zones, anchorages or protected areas.
  • Documents and formalities: If you are the skipper of the boat, make sure you have a boat license to present. In addition, we strongly advise you to take out damage waiver insurance even if you hire a skipper: in the event of damage to the boat, you are directly responsible, and damage waiver protects you from any unintentional damage.

When to sail in Italy?

Spring is a superb time to sail in Italy, with mild temperatures, green landscapes and fewer tourists. Note, however, that the winds can be stronger and the rains more frequent than in summer, the hottest season but also the most touristy. It is an ideal season to enjoy the beaches, its disadvantages are the crowds and higher prices. Autumn is also a very pleasant season for a yacht charter in Italy. There are fewer tourists and the temperatures are rather mild. Finally, we do not recommend going sailing in winter, as it is the coldest season and the least suitable for sailing in Italy. The days are short and the winds are quite strong.

Here is an average of the temperatures encountered in recent years in Italy:
